When it comes to the quality and price ($320 a bottle!) of this outstanding Shiraz, the term Super Premium is an understatement. The story of this winery began in, you guessed it, 1847. After the proclamation of a land grant by the Governor for the historic Rowland Flat property, Bavarian immigrant Johann Gramp planted what was the first commercial vineyard in the Barossa Valley. 1847 winery now encompasses some 200 acres of premium estate vineyards. “There's a bright, spicy crunch to the best of '17 Barossa shiraz. This is a refreshingly medium-bodied style laced with red cherries, greengage plums and a hint of black pepper. Tangy acid line and a fine tannin grid carry a finish of impressive persistence... 95pts” (Halliday Wine Companion, Tyson Stelzer).

This old vine Barossa Shiraz is the top-of-the-line Angas King offering. Made only in the best years from premium fruit drawn from a single Barossa vineyard, it’s a truly memorable drop. Gnarled old vines yielding minimal fruit made this an intensely flavourful wine, but also a rare one. As Winepilot’s Ray Jordan says, “2018 turned out to be a very good year in the Barossa. This captures the region, the season and the variety as well as you could expect. It’s concentrated and powerful, and yet there’s a high degree of elegance. Dark, plummy, spicy notes with a little roasted coffee, and just a lick of oak on the finish… 95pts”. Wendouree has achieved cult status with its tiny production from ancient vines. Luscious dark berry Shiraz fruits and some meaty characters run through the full-bodied palate with ripe tannins.

Bright plum in colour, Penfolds Bin 169 Cabernet Sauvignon displays delicate notes of mint and blackcurrant, with a more savory bouquet of semi-dried tomatoes and fruit chutney at the end. A hint of oak and spice adds extra warmth. On the palate a flavour-wheel of spearmint, milo powder, chocolate and black liquorice.
