Kavalan Concertmaster Port Finish Single Malt Taiwanese Whisky

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Deep polished copper colour. Aromatically, a curious mix of roasted nuts, aniseed infused honey, ginger biscuit and a pantry full of sweet spices, in particular, vanilla, clove and cinnamon. Soft entry builds into a beautifully harmonised, light to middle-weight whisky offering delicate mince fruit pie flavours and gentle heat. Subtle vanilla and manuka honey aftertaste...Good wine vs whisky balance. More interesting with every sip. 40% Alc./Vol.

Kirin Fuji Single Grain Japanese Whisky

While most other Japanese distilleries have followed the methods of Scotland, Mt. Fuji Distillery is influenced by major whisk(e)y producers all around the world, which explains this tri-part blend distilled using three different methods, each giving their own unique flavour profile. Although the exact mash-bill isn't stated, the backbone of the spirit is reported to be a 'Canadian style' grain, made with a batch distillation in something similar to a kettle still. That's supported by a Bourbon-style distillate using a Doubler, and a third Scotch-style light grain put through a continuous multi-column still. The triptych of profiles comes through in the flavours. Fuji smells a little more malt-like than typical single grain with creamy soda and vanilla malt enhanced by delicate fruity notes like stewed pears and caramelised apples. It's also fuller, richer and with more mouthfeel than you'd anticipate. There are the standard lashings of vanilla wafer but they sit over a backdrop of poached orchard fruits and warming wood spices, followed by more creamy soda, hints of dried banana and a lovely flourish of American oak which gives a Bourbonesque or light rye character to the finish. This release was initially for bars only, but from early 2021 it became available for regular tipplers in Japan and then abroad. A good thing. It's a single grain with terrific mouthfeel, and one that deserves a wide audience. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Notes from the producers... NOSE Aromas of poached pear, rustic fruit tart, Cognac and marron glacé. PALATE Seamless mouthfeel with multi layered flavours of poached pear, orange marmalade, raspberry jam, baking spices, and bitter chocolate. FINISH Mellow with gentle sweetness and pleasant spiciness, smooth with medium length finish and a hint of exotic incense.

Kavalan Triple Sherry Matured Single Malt Taiwanese Whisky

Kavalan have launched a new expression matured in three different Sherry casks, namely oloroso, Pedro Ximénez (PX) and Moscatel casks. Senior Blender, Zerose Yang adds, “Its main character, the dried fruits of the oloroso cask, are embellished with the sweetness of PX and Moscatel casks... The resulting liquid offers notes of cinnamon, candied smoked plum, and citrus, layered with a nose of berry, tropical fruits, and longan, alongside a dash of honey, chocolate, and toffee on the palate." For those who are used to the distillery's extravagant cask strength expressions, this takes a step back. The nose presents an attractive array of dried fruits and plummy malt, mingling with sweet spices. It's an accessible, middle weight style, with a convincing sherry lick and an appropriate dash of spice. You can't really fault the balance, but in the context of what this distillery is best known for, it's Kavalan light. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Milk & Honey Distillery Elements Red Wine Single Malt Israeli Whisky

Ex-red wine barrels that were sourced from Israel's finest wineries were picked for this edition in M & H's 'Elements' trilogy. A ginger-like keynote gives definite warmth to the opening sniffs, leading into a dryish, malty nose with vanilla and fruit sweetness developing. It's more winey in the mouth, where a gentle astringency adds a grippy tactile dimension in tandem with the spices. A malty - red berry thread surfaces, giving a juicy dried berry-like character to the finish. There's hints of dried coconut too, followed by lingering wood spices. Non Chill Filtered. Kosher. 46% Alc./Vol.

Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Blended Malt Japanese Whisky

Lots of very warm reviews on the blogoshere for this no-age-statement expression of Nikka which reportedly over-delivers for an entry level whisky. Named after the company's founder, Masataka Taketsuru, and aged on average for around 10 years, it includes whiskies from the Miyagikyo & Yoichi distilleries, including malt matured in Sherry casks.

The Milk & Honey Distillery Elements Peated Single Malt Israeli Whisky

Matured in barrels that previously held Islay whisky, then blended with ex-bourbon barrels left to mature under the hot Tel Aviv sun. The result is a delicate, rather mellow and lightly peated whisky. Non Chill Filtered. Classified Kosher.

Kavalan Concertmaster Sherry Finish Single Malt Whisky

Tasting note: [15ml sample] The second whisky in the Concertmaster series is aged in the distillery’s own special reserve of refill casks, then finished in the Spanish ex Sherry casks. Moderate aromas of dried fruits, in particular, dried mango followed by a touch of banana. Medium-dry rather than sweet, accessible, well rounded and with solid depth at this ABV, instead of traditional sherried notes, blueberries come to mind, especially at the finish where the impression is enhanced by fresh acidity. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Milk & Honey Distillery Elements Sherry Single Malt Israeli Whisky

Judged World's Best Whisky at the 2023 World Whisky Awards. To create this whisky M&H commissioned seasoned Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez barrels from Spain. After twelve months in Jerez, the barrels were transported to the distillery and filled with new-make. It's not clear how or why, but this has been declared / classified as the first and only kosher sherry matured single malt whisky in the world. The shyness of the nose doesn't give away much, except that it's whisky. However it's more expressive on the palate where a nutty / dried-fruit kind of sherry is evident, followed by bitter cocoa. Youthful spices add lift and vibrancy before tea biscuit-like malt enters late. One of the drier sherried styles going around, but grows on you. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

The Kurayoshi 12 Year Old Pure Malt Japanese Whisky

Kurayoshi are one of a few Japanese small-scale craft (or Ji) whiskies to be released in Australia. Created in the shadow of Mt Daisen, at the Matsui Distillery, the whiskies benefit from the mountain’s crystal clear waters and over a century of expertise. The blenders here often combine malt whisky from Scotland with locally produced whisky. This is not an uncommon practice in Japan, and the exact breakdown typically remains undisclosed. Tasting note: Polished copper. Not vastly different to the 8 year old, showing the same subtle Summer yellow fruits, only softer again and with delicious succulence, a bigger finish and better length. It's delicately oily with cocoa-dusted stewed fruits and buzzing spices through the finish. The balance is perfect here, and it feels older than it actually is. Pick of the bunch. 43% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Battery Point Distillery Triple Single Malt Whisky

Product Information: A must-try for whisky enthusiasts, Triple Cask is Battery Point Distillery’s signature single malt whisky, renowned for its complexity, maltiness, balance, and harmony. Crafted to be a staple whisky, it offers remarkable consistency from batch to batch. On the nose, it opens with rich notes of vanilla and bourbon, evolving into sweet aromas of Persian rose fairy floss, orange peel, and a hint of marzipan nuttiness. Distilled by Jack Lark and blended by Louis Duckett, Triple Cask is a harmonious blend of multiple bourbon, sherry, and tawny casks. The result is an easy-drinking yet complex whisky, with an ABV ranging from 45% to 50% depending on the batch. This particular batch is bottled at 46.4% ABV. Jack Lark’s creative approach to cask influence is carried forward by Luke Lawrence and the production team. Their focus on crafting rich, oily, malty, and slightly fruity new-make spirit forms the foundation of Battery Point Distillery’s whiskies. Made from 100% Tasmanian malt mash and pure Tasmanian water, each batch offers a unique experience, showcasing the distillery's attention to detail. Maker: Battery Point Distillery was founded out of a passion for Tasmania’s rich history and the art of whisky distillation. Located in the heart of Hobart’s historic Battery Point, the distillery specialises in small-batch, handcrafted whiskies matured in carefully selected sherry, tawny, and bourbon casks. Established by Jack Lark, son of Australian whisky pioneer Bill Lark, the distillery is now led by Luke Lawrence, who continues to uphold the high standards of quality. Each batch of whisky reflects the unique characteristics imparted by single, double, or triple cask ageing, providing contemporary expressions of Tasmania’s rich distilling heritage. Philosophy: Battery Point Distillery is nestled in Lenna, a grand mansion built by seafaring merchant Alexander McGregor, which overlooks Hobart's docks and has been a symbol of wealth since the mid-1800s. Today, the distillery occupies a humble, vine-covered shed on the property, quietly producing fine whisky while nearby pubs bustle with life. Inside, a locally built still and a collection of 60-litre barrels sit next to the weathered desk where the head distiller crafts the next batch. The distillery’s philosophy revolves around respecting traditional distillation techniques while pushing the boundaries with small-batch, innovative whiskies that capture the essence of Tasmania.
