Entry: Velvety and plush and fragrant rich blackberrycherry fruits. Some tangy cedar and lingering cigar box characters. Middle Palate: Juicy round black cherry fruits, tempered with the soft idiosyncratic "milk chocolate" McLaren Vale Shiraz sweetness and roundness. After Palate: Lashings of trademark milk chocolate with blackberries and dark-fleshed plums and spice with velvety, smooth tannins. Finish: Juicy blackberry and mocha notes intertwined with signature lush McLaren Vale tannins. It's like taking a big mouthful of Black Forest cake.

The premium fruit parcels for this Shiraz wine were sent to the winerys Vintage House and crushed into 7-decade old concrete vats. Fermentation was carried out by wild yeasts found on the skins of the fruit. This was followed by careful extraction. Post fermentation maceration was done next and the drink transferred to American and French oak hogsheads for malolactic fermentation. 14 to 16 months later, the resultant wine was racked and filtered.

The Hewett and Colton families sailed from England to Adelaide in 1839. Charles Hewitt moved to the Oxenberry farm site in 1840. The fruit for this appealing Shiraz is from the site where Hewet and William Colton planted McLaren Vale’s first vines, fed by a local freshwater spring. The Shiraz is beautifully crafted by McLaren Vale stalwarts, the Scarpantoni brothers, who back in 2007 won the highly prized Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show. Blackberries, plum, a chocolatey texture, with smooth tannins and a touch of savoury spice, means this suits many dishes from herby lamb to tomato pasta.

Deep, dark red in colour. The nose is pure and unobstructed by newoak, lifted with dark fruit flavours of blackberry, chocmint, and anise. Dustings of white pepper spice, vanilla, and black olive tapenade provide an intriguing savoury counterpoint to the more primary fruit characters. On the palate is a concentrated, uscious rolling texture packed with fresh blackberry, dark chocolate and liquorice flavours. The wine is juicy and plush with silky tannins that linger, providing a drying, savoury finish.

With vineyards approx. 5km from the ocean (as the crow flies) the benefits of the cooling breezes are evident on the wine. It is inky yet bright, with silky dark fruits and excellent length. Bold, smooth and wonderfully balanced

Once the juice loosens up and releases its hidden depths, it develops an aroma that is just divine. Ben Riggs has hand-crafted a delicious Shiraz Cabernet Merlot blend here that pays homage to the three-spiked prickle that can be found in the McLaren Vale region and the fact that it's hard to ignore. This unctuous red blend is also extremely hard to ignore with its seamless varietal integration that produces a wine full of richness and opulence. Ripe, dark berry fruits courtesy of Merlot along with spice elements from the Shiraz and a firm, but balanced structure from the Cabernet all come together superbly.
