The brilliant 2020 Maison Eros McLaren Vale Shiraz is rich and full, showing intense plum and dark berries with elegant savoury earthy tannins that round out the mid palate. The wine finished with great balance and length. Characterised by a depth and intensity only achievable with old vine fruit. The subtle integrated oak and textural tannins will soften as the wine ages.

In 1802, the peaceful Encounter of two great explorers, the English Captain Flinders, and the French Captain Baudin, occurred at the co-ordinates of 35 ̊40’S and 138 ̊58’E, off the south coast of South Australia. Following this discovery, a period of settlement and agricultural establishment ensued, and a large winery was built in our region in 1896, which latter became known as Southern Vales Winery. Each one of our wines has a story and integrity of its own. Today, Southern Vales is a place where valley and sea meet, our family’s work hard together, and we all share the bounties of regions natural way of life. Seven is the seed of life, it is the number of perfection, security, safety and rest, it also contains the number three of the heavens and soul with the number four of the earth and body. The No. 7 is a classic Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%) and Shiraz (46%), the aromatic and perfumed Cabernet Sauvignon providing the firm structure and distinctive tannin length while the spicy Shiraz contribute the richness and softness. The fruit is complimented and enhanced by extended maturation (24 months) in French oak barrels, which softens and complexes the rich fruits resulting in a full-flavoured and generous wine with great length and harmony. Variety - 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Shiraz Region - McLaren Vale Colour - Purple Black Aroma - The rich bouquet shows blue and blackberries, dark cherry, cassis and a touch of anise intermingled with dark chocolate and vanilla oak. Palate - Sweet ripe fruit flavours provide plushness on the palate and are nicely balanced by soft ripe tannins which extend the flavours in the mouth. Rich and full-flavoured now, this wine will benefit from more time in the bottle.

Name With our love for the ocean and the stunning coastline on the cusp of McLaren Vale being a massive draw card to calling this fantastic little town home it made sense to link the name of our Reserve Shiraz to it. The Squid Ink name originated from the enticing first impression of the black, dye like depth of colour this wine resonates. Vineyard Our Squid Ink vineyard is the epitome of what defines one of the greatest vineyards in Australia where the famous Black Bay of Biscay Clay soil ensures fantastic fruit. Referred to by some local friends as ‘Mayfair’ the use of sustainable viticulture and having true respect for the value of our vineyards and the fruit they create. Winery In the winery the Squid Ink Shiraz fruit is treated with utmost respect, ensuring quality from start to finish. Fermented slowly for gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tannin, the wine is monitored closely. Following fermentation, the wine is then matured in the finest of predominantly new American oak with the 2021 seeing 60% new oak Hogheads for 18 months. Maturation 18 Months in American Oak, 60% new oak Colour Deep intense dark, almost black with a purple hue. Nose There’s a depth of concentration here only seen in some year and here I think it’s reminiscent of the 2010 or 2015 vintage. The complexity seeks several sniffs to grasp. Undeniably intriguing the earthy, savoury character lingers awaiting full expression from a little more time all while tightly embraced with layers of fruit. Palate Like the nose this wine pulls you in for more. The palate is timeless, with a firm but grounded texture the all-encompassing finish drives the wine across the mouth, leaving a full, expressive and delicious lasting experience. This wine is what we believe to be a true representative of Shiraz from our region. As an Estate owned, sustainably grown, single vineyard Shiraz, we have the ability to deliver a world-class wine consistently that is truly at the top of its game. This wine, like our lives, is wonderful in youth, but with patience and development of the wines fruit, along with the integration of the finest of oak this wine will also develop wonderfully. Secret Selection shows all the hallmarks of a big brand style and characteristic associated with luxcury region.Plummy, ripe cherries with freshly crack pepper, mixed with spicy cedar oak in the background. This Shiraz is a deep red in colour. Plum, red berry and cedar lifted aromas. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated with a dense platform of tannin under layers of black fruit, liquorice and dark chocolate complexity and a long generous finish. If this isn't in your cellar yet it should be!

Chris Hatcher of 'Hatch Wines' has been a winemaker for almost 50 years including more than 35 years at Wolf Blass, 27 as Chief Winemaker. After many years of contemplating releasing his own wines, Hatch retired from TWE in June 2023 and then in October/November released my own label HATCH, his monicker for most of his life. Hatch McLaren Vale Vesey Shiraz is a powerful, rich and plush wine with great vibrance and purity. The palate is intense, opulent and silky, delicious now, however will be reward with medium to long-term cellaring. 'A dense vibrant purple, aromas which simply leap from the glass.
