Chris Hatcher of 'Hatch Wines' has been a winemaker for almost 50 years including more than 35 years at Wolf Blass, 27 as Chief Winemaker. After many years of contemplating releasing his own wines, Hatch retired from TWE in June 2023 and then in October/November released my own label HATCH, his monicker for most of his life. Flaxman’s Valley is one of the Australia’s classic regions for Riesling. It is a subregion of Eden Valley located almost 250 metres above the Barossa floor on the eastern slopes of the Barossa Ranges. The high altitude gives a cool climate and long ripening period that is essential for making high quality Riesling. The HATCH Flaxman’s Riesling is floral with hints of lime and jasmine. The palate is elegant with intense fruit and fine natural acidity that is delicious now but will reward with medium to long-term cellaring.

Yalumba has devoted over 20 years to growing and making this rare and exotic variety. This example is a fresh and vibrant wine that displays white peach and citrus flavours with spicy undertones.

The vineyards high altitude location and unique geology has resulted in distinct characteristics that develop further with ageing in this splendid Riesling. You can also note delicate hints of rose petals and cloves that will develop into classic toast and honey characteristics after cellaring. Zesty and driven, the fresh citrus fruit is lifted by perfumed delicate florals and struck flint. A zip of acidity on the palate balances well the generosity of fruit, with a long and textured finish. Drink cold on a hot day for maximum refreshment or, if you have the patience, squirrel a few away to be rewarded over the next 5-10 years.

A Shoemaker, also known as a Corviser, once lived at the bridge over the creek. When he passed on, the place was then named after his most important tool, Snob, the small anvil used to shape the toe end of a boot. The Corviser Pinot Noir shows elegance and finesse. Spicy cherry aromas with a characteristically vibrant mouth feel. Combined with the well-integrated oak, it gives a silky finish towards the beautifully balanced wine.
