First released in 1953, this wine commonly known as Para Port is based on Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, matured in seasoned oak barrels for around 28 years. The vintage date refers to the oldest component of the blend, which conflicts with current labelling standards.

The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975 when fruit was directed to other wines, nor in 1981, 1995, 2000, 2003 or 2011 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not available). The formidable fortress depicted on the famed vanilla Latour label was built to withstand the Gironde pirate attacks of the 15th Century.
