Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark to brick red hue. Elevated aromas of ripe dark cherries intermix with anise, earthy notes, some meatiness and spicy cedar. Quite rich and full the palate is laden with ripe black cherry and anise flavours which overlay a back drop of toasty cedar, dried meats and earth. Spicy finish with sturdy, slightly grainy tannins. Long spicy black cherry and anise aftertaste.

One of the most exciting discoveries we made from a trip to New Zealand last year. Coal Pit is located in the Gibbston Valley sub region of Central Otago. Perfumed with violets, the nose is lifted and aromatic. Vibrant mid palate of black doris plum, wild herb, coffee and cassis backed by silky tannins and well integrated spicy oak. This savoury Pinot Noir is the result of an assemblage of twelve individual batches sourced from our Maroondah Highway vineyard. Subtle aromas of rhubarb, violets, earth, chervil, mace, leather, pencil shavings & cocoa nib with a stemmy note contributed by fermention with stalks. The composed elegant palate exhibits strawberry, tamarind & peach stone tartness from ingrained natural acidity, softly spreading fruit weight & sweeping talc-like tannins.

The vineyard has great capacity to create aromatic wines with high natural acidity.This style shows plum skin, blueberry & morello cherry that weaves into a long savoury finish.

Many class Ata Rangi as the quintessential 'New World' Pinot Noir, the best example of the variety outside of Burgundy. It's hard to argue when you let the supple, dark berry and spiced fruit pass your lips. Considered 'Grand Cru' in New Zealand, Ata Rangi was awarded the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa classification, cementing its pedigree.
