The Christopher This wine is a selection of the two finest barrels of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in the winery for each vintage. It is dedicated to a young aspiring winemaker who had the potential to become one of the Barossas best. A blend of the two varieties that the region is most famous for and the two that Chris enjoyed working with the most. The wine is full bodied with a long seamless structure and balanced tannins. The rich dark fruit flavours of ripe Plum and Blackcurrants coat the palate. Made in a generous Barossa style the aromas of redfruits, sweet spice and cedar are complemented by a dense andripe palate of dark fruits, chocolate, soft tannin and length offlavour.

Bin 138 draws its inspiration from the wines of Southern Rhône, where shiraz, grenache and mataro (mourvèdre) are blended in varying proportions to create full-bodied wines possessing rich and heady perfume. Each year fruit for Bin 138 is sourced from old Barossa Valley vines (some more than 100 years old).Bright red garnet in colour, with raspberry-leaf and pastille fruits on fruits on the nose supported by discrete hints of boot polish and stewed meats. The palate is juicy, dense, and more-ish - ironstone, fresh red and dark berries, permeated by super-fine tannins.Peak drinking: Now-2035

TASTING NOTESThe dark, brooding regional characters of plum, red cherry and liquorice are all to the fore of this wine.The palate is focused and linear, with dark bitter chocolate notes and an elegant long persistent finish. We recommend cellaring for 10 years.WINEMAKINGThe most westerly zone of the Barossa, known as the Western Slopes, gives rise to some of the richest expressions of Shiraz from the Barossa. Marananga, centred in the North West quadrant of the Barossa provides some of the Valleys most powerful wines. The red brown clay loam soils with schists and siltstone yield flavours of jam and fruitcake, cardamom, blueberry fruits, cocoa powder with an undercurrent of roasted meats and crackling.WINEMAKINGTo ensure the unique character of this sub region is exemplified in the wine, small open fermenters and our basket press were employed to gently extract the wine. Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre) has a history going back to 1960 when Penfolds made a traditional "Burgundy" style. Penfolds have always loved Mataro (Mourvèdre) for its fantastic ability to blend marvelously with traditional South Australian stalwarts like Shiraz. Adding luscious complexity and palate grip, the Bin 2 is aged in older oak to emphasise the spicy savouriness of Mataro (Mourvèdre) that complements the plush richness of Shiraz.
