The Davey family members aren't just great winemakers; they are aficionados of fine food and wine. Blackberry and strawberry primary aromas are highlighted with notes of chocolate and a twist of white pepper. The cassis fruit of the medium full palate is focused into the long finish by satiny tannins and subtle roasted cashew-like oak.

Maverick Trial Hill Eden Valley Shiraz

Long, smooth and unctuous; briary black and blue fruits, cedar/chocolate oak and mineral undertones lifted by scents of flowers and dried herbs. Brightly lit cassis, blackberry and dark plum flavours knit with polished oak and firm, gravelly tannins, building texture towards its savoury finish. Our flagship Trial Hill Vineyard was part (Block 1968) of the original Pewsey Vale Station, the oldest cool climate vineyard of Australia, first planted in 1847 at the instigation of Joseph Gilbert. The actual planting was undertaken by Peter Wilson, the blacksmith and rouseabout of Pewsey Vale Station, who is thought to have lived where the Trial Hill residence currently stands - his diary on Guy Fawkes' Day (5th November) 1865 details his problems with the Breechens mechanism of his horse-drawn cart which resulted in their crashing into the creek - we use this diary entry on our Breechens label as a tribute to the pioneering spirit of Barossa's first settlers and the perils they overcame. "This is the business established by highly experienced vigneron Ronald Brown. It has evolved, now with seven vineyards across the Barossa and Eden valleys, all transitioned into biodynamic grape production. The vines range from 40 to almost 150 years old, underpinning the consistency and quality of the wines." James Halliday Maverick Wines Pty Ltd. was established in 2004. The objective was and is to become one of the top premium boutique wineries in Australia. Although the company is young, Maverick owns 150 acres of vineyards from the top terroirs across the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Approximately half of the vines are over 100 years old, and many much older - at our Ahrens' Creek Vineyard at Vine Vale we have 1840's Semillon, 1840's Grenache, and 1870's Shiraz, while in our adjoining Barossa Ridge Vineyard we have some Riesling from the 1860's! For many years the fruit from these vineyards went into some of the top names of the Australian wine industry - they are now proudly incorporated into our Maverick wines.
