Adelaide brothers, Jon and Con Lioulios own and run Thirty Six Short Distillery from Virginia in South Australia, where they recently launched Australia's first Rakia - partly as a tribute to their late Macedonian father, Pando whose dream was to distil traditional Rakia. The venture is actually named after Pando’s suit size, '36 Short'. A 1200 litre copper pot still also bears his name. The brother's first single malt was released in late 2021, cut back with water sourced from an aquifer that runs directly underneath the distillery. The barrels are locally sourced, x-Shiraz, shaven and charred American oak barrels. This initial maturation is followed by further resting in x Bourbon barrels to add fruity notes, before the liquid is finally returned to the Shiraz casks for a finishing. Advanced in colour, it feels more like a sherry matured Scottish malt than a warm climate Australian whisky. Aromas of oak shavings, pepper, cocoa and a dry nuttiness confirm the wine character, as does the full-bodied delivery: Dried fruits come through at the middle; Cherry ripe chocolate leads the finish where sweeter Bourbon-like notes converge over the wood spices. Even if the oak is a bit overdone, especially after air contact, it's an undeniable success for a first edition. 45% Alc./Vol. Notes from the producers... Due to its Southern hemisphere birth, swirl anti-clockwise in the glass to waken its slumber and unlock sensory treasures including honey, tangerine, cardamom and brioche.

Head Distiller Graham Buller collected prime barrels of Scotch whisky and American Bourbon whiskey, with a dream of creating his perfect blend. The Scotch has an average of five years barrel maturation and the Bourbon two, while the final blend has gone back into bourbon barrels for finishing.

We approached the Distillers’ Release gin series with an idea to push boundaries; experimenting with flavours and seasonal ingredients to create profiles that ignite the imagination. We use a blend of the base liquor and Mount Lofty spring water, gently infusing it with a unique range of seasonal botanicals foraged locally and from around the globe. Our barrel aged Gin has been aged in an American oak ex apera barrel (Australia's answer to sherry). It is lusciously sweet and complex. A limited edition gin never able to be repeated.

Burly Citrus Gin is produced in hand crafted sets of bespoke stills at our artisan distillery in Burleigh Heads. Infusions of green and pink Australian finger limes, the flesh and rind of four other fresh citrus fruits and a combination of premium ingredients come together to achieve the unique flavour profile of our double distilled gin. The aroma of this 'citralicous' variant is predominantly blood orange and lime supported by juniper and spice. The palate exhibits more of the same flavours along with subtle notes of vanilla and liquorice. With a tangy mouthfeel and 'citrus' aftertaste lifted by the slight alcohol heat, it lends itself to enjoying straight, 'on the rocks', or in the cocktail of your preference, ideally with slices of orange, lime, pink grapefruit and finger lime beads. Introducing Cedar Fox Distilling Co, a newcomer to the Australian independent spirits space with the release of its gin. A savoury dry gin with peppery fragrant earthy aromas, it incorporates urban botanicals such as Juniper Berries, Coriander Seed, Lemon Peel, Lebanese Cucumber, Sichuan Peppercorn, Lemon Verbena and Rosemary. Distilled in Melbourne. Brogans Royal Blood Gin is the savoury sensation that is her navy strength gin. Something a bit special, complex with a lingering cardamom heat, at 57.2% it has a bit of a kick. Herbal aromas and flavours from the rosemary and bay leaf are seasoned with Australian sea parsley, saltbush and roasted wattle seed giving plenty of good mouthfeel. Tasting Note Juniper forward, dry, slightly citrus, and extremely savoury. With herbal and aromatic characters of fresh vapour distilled rosemary leaf, supported by bay leaf, olive leaf and black peppercorns, that are amplified by the Australian natives of spicy mountain pepper leaf, fragrant and savoury salt bush and salty sea parsley. A bold amount of roasted native wattle seeds lengthens the finish and exaggerates the heat of green cardamom. A winner in a dry Martini and a Dirty G&T with a slice of apple to garnish.
