"Scuro" is a blend of Sangiovese and Shiraz from our Dark Horse Vineyard, co-harvested and co-fermented. Scuro (meaning "Dark") is named for both its Italian roots and for the impressive dark colour that took us by surprise during fermentation. Extended maturation in French Oak Hogsheads has resulted in a powerful and generous wine with a deep ruby hue, rich palate and great cellaring potential. Johanne Pfeiffer and Christian Auricht sought a new life in the Barossa, where they married and raised a family. They brought their traditions with them, including brides wearing black dresses on their wedding day. Sadly, Johanne was widowed in 1860, and this wine is named Black Widow in her honour.

Intriguing aromas of rose petals and a summer pudding of lifted red fruits, berries and a hit of cinnamon and Asian spice. The palate is opulent, with intense red berries balanced by soft velvety tannins and supple oak with great balance from the acid reknown in Barossa Grenache. 'The cold, wet 2011 vintage hit the Barossa Valley particularly hard, wiping out huge tracts of vineyards. Dandelion's blend, then, came as a delightful surprise a tender, juicy, seductive drop that made the bottle seem too small. It's a blend of grenache (85 per cent), shiraz (10 per cent) and mataro (aka mourvedre or monastrell). The back label hints at how winemaker Elena Brooks and the Dandelion crew saved the day, "handpicking selected bunches" (that is, avoiding the rotten ones) of the three varieties for co-fermentation and ultimate success. The palate demonstrates all of the hallmarks of what one of McLaren Vales champion varieties can do as a Rose. Strawberries and cream, Turkish delight and bright red berries balance with a bone dry, crisp, moreish acidity and a textural citrus pith finish. We challenge you to stop at only one glass!
