Michael Kane, Chief Winemaker at Knappstein has a love for wine, and travel that has led him to visit and work across the world – Burgundy, Champagne, Oregon, Napa and Central Otago, and he has crafted many award-winning wines for celebrated brands such as Devil’s Lair, Stella Bella and Wolf Blass. The team at Knappstein consider themselves guardians of the vines, most of which are in excess of 50 years. They adopt a minimal intervention approach in the vineyard with the aim to create wines of real personality and unique regionality while maintaining rigorous high standards of sustainability.

Clare Valley’s Jim Barry is a name known around the world – a byword for quality and wine expertise. A founding member of Australia’s First Families of Wine, the Barry family celebrated the 60th anniversary of its winery in 2020, the year it also scooped the title of Halliday’s ‘Winery of the Year’. Over three generations the Barry name has been famous throughout the wine world and synonymous with the Clare Valley. Jim Barry bought his first vineyard here in 1959, and even helped the Taylor family open their winery a decade later. Son Peter took over Jim Barry in 1985, and today brothers Tom and Sam, with sister Olivia, have raised the bar even higher.Their range includes flawless Riesling (think Florita), unique Assyrtiko – a Greek white grape Peter introduced to Australia in 2016 – and exciting reds, including the iconic $350+ Armagh Shiraz. Who are you is a deceptively attractive 93pts blend (65% Shiraz and 35% Mataro) taking an old school work-horse variety (Mataro) to pump up the volume on classic Clare Valley Shiraz... this is classy, complex and finely crafted. The 2023 Dunn's Selection Shiraz Cabernet is an exciting new exclusive from Clare Valley's celebrated Knappstein winery. And it's immediately caught the attention of show judges winning Double Gold. It's a classic Aussie blend of 70% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium bodied Shiraz with true strength of flavour and richness provide the base for this wine. Characteristic Cabernet flavours of blackcurrants and dark chocolate are highlighted with touches of mint-cream. The Knappstein website tells us that "Fruit is grown on our Yertabulti and Provis vineyards, situated at the northern end of the Clare Valley, this is the perfect climate for maturing our premium red grapes." In the glass: Dark red with a slight brick hue. On the nose: Aromatic lift of cassis and dark berry fruit, mint and cedar with leathery development adding character. On the palate: Dense and plush though not heavy, with chocolate, mocha and dark fruit power. Still vibrant and intense yet rich and complex with layers of sweet friut, earth, herb and toasty oak - a lovely example of aged Cabernet!
