Church Block first appeared back in 1972 under the watchful eye of Greg Trott and was taken by one of the original vineyards that ran alongside the small Bethany Church, across the road from Wirra Wirra's old ironstone cellars. Over the last 4 decades, it has become one of Australia's favourites. The 2005 Church Block is showing just what a little patience can do. After six years, the velvet texture is the dominant feature with integrated tannin taking a backseat.

Bottled early to retain the fresh fruit characters this wine is from the Murray Darling region in Victoria. The lively passionfruit and gooseberry flavours captured in the wine suit a prawn and rocket pasta perfectly.

Wolf Blass continues to produce brilliant quality wines at unbeatable prices and the Red Label Cabernet Merlot is the perfect example. The wine has bright berry and plum fruit aromas supported by subtle nutty oak. The palate displays a juicy fruit finish with approachable fine tannins and its best enjoyed young and fresh with hearty red meat dishes.

Zilzie's Cabernet Sauvignon has generous layers of rich dark berry fruits, delicate tannins and an elegant touch of oak. The palate of menthol and mint are balanced by ripe blackcurrant and plum. The Cabernet brings succulent blackberry and plum to the glass, all enriched by toasty, supple oak tannins. Aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant and plum layered with toasty oak. The palate is rich in dark berry, varietal flavours balanced by oak and velvety tannins. Pairs perfectly to grilled steak with black peppercorn sauce and fat chips.

While Durif is not widely grown in Australia but has a loyal following nonetheless. De Bortoli Deen Vat 1 is an excellent example, showing typically deep colour and lots of rich, ripe fruit supported by firm tannins. Perfect when paired with a thick cut steak and roasted vegetables.
