A high proportion of Crystal malt in Old Speckled Hen provides the key toffee/caramel flavour. The yeast used to ferment the beer provides the other key character - estery or banana/pear drop. This estery note provides the fruity and refreshing balance. The hops used add a palate cleansing herbal note and very slight orange citrus.

Since 1698, (that's over 310years!) Shepherd Neame have been crafting fine ales of Britain. This ale, named after the fighter plane that fought and won The Battle of Britain, has a dark amber appearance, with toffee and dried fruit aromatics. The Broadside is made in tribute to a fierce naval battle between the English and Dutch in 1672. The English fleet was moored in Southwold at the time, home to the Adnams Brewery, legend has it most of the sailors were in a tavern when they were called to arms. This is a full bodied ale of fruitcake, pungent hops and punchy alcohol. Perfect with strong cheddar.

Originally created in 1828 by Johann Gottlieb Boker, whose company closed during Prohibition in the 1920s. This re-formulation was released in August 2009, and uses overproof spirit and seven botanicals including orange peel, quassia bark, catechu, cardamom and mallow flowers.

A limited edition bottling reformulated in 2010, using knowledge of patent bitters and referencing old formulae, medical journals and advertisements, these bitters now attempt to recreate the defunct bottling. Overproof spirit and eight botanicals are used, including chamomile, orange peel, lemon peel, coriander seed and orris root.
