The very first Gruner Veltliner from the Eden Valley, growing blissfully alongside their natural soulmate, Riesling (and showing some similar characters). Rich golden yellow in colour with an intriguing floral nose of blossom and stone fruit. The palate is rich and broad offering nectarine and white peach with back notes of citrus and grapefruit. A beautifully textural wine yet a pure, clean, mineral finish.

Each year we make a Reserve Riesling from the very best parcel of fruit out of one of our four Riesling blocks. For the fourth year in a row Block 7 was the stand out. Pale straw with a perfumed nose of rose petal and jasmine. Lime over zesty lemon on the palate with an acid backbone that delivers a long steely finish. This parcel was selected by winemaker Nick Badrice for its exceptional quality. Subtle French oak lifts natural stone fruit aromas, with melon notes balances by crisp acidity to give structure and a lengthy finish.

For John Hughes, the attraction to Riesling is all encompassing. Growing up on a small vineyard in the Clare Valley, and going on to work with some of the brightest Riesling makers in the country before launching his own venture, John is never far away from his beloved grape. John makes classic Australian styles from carefully selected vineyards with an emphasis on purity and site reflection, as well as German-inspired expressions that balance acidity and sugar with singular precision.

Conceived as a white wine development program, the Bin 51 Riesling soon became one of Penfolds' star performers. Eden Valley is an obvious choice of region for Riesling due to the higher altitude and cool climate. The wine offers delicate aromas of fresh cut apples and pears with a twist of lemon and minerality towards the end. A great deal of fruits and acidity makes for an interesting white wine with propensity to age gracefully if carefully cellared.
