Sourced purely from five preferred clones. Basket pressed after ferment. Some whole bunches used. Matured in both old & new French barriques prior to bottling.Rich with dark cherries, raspberries & ripe tomatoes. Rose perfume notes, as well as hints of rosemary, truffles & charred oak. Brimming with juicy red & blue fruits, along with caraway seeds & truffle oil. The fruit opulence is framed by length-defining tannins, with briary & stalky notes. Under these layers are also cinnamon, cloves & cigar-box. The texture is plush & extraordinarily generous with a very fine, chewy finish.

While the establishment date of Arrivo is 1998, when Peter Godden and partner Sally McGill established a nursery block of 35 vines of nebbiolo, the inspiration goes back to 1995 and '96, when Peter spent much time in Barolo, Italy, working the '96 vintage at leading producer Vietti.Now with plantings of around 1 hectare of nebbiolo, Peter uses a unique trellis and training system derived from Barolo, but with an Australian twist. Not only is the trellis complicated and unique, but so are the amazingly complicated fermentation techniques being used.The resulting wines are a benchmark for Australian nebbiolo.

VINEYARD: Fruit is sourced from 120-year-old dry grown Shiraz vines from Martin & Joan Smiths vineyard in the Polish Hill River. Grey loam acid soils over sandstone and slate make up the profile with much of the top soil littered with rock, hinting at just how tough the vines need to be to sustain growth and produce quality fruit - not to mention the work of the vigneron to ensure overall balance. Despite growing these vines organically since their planting in the 1970s, 2012 marked the first year of NASAA Organic Certification for these vineyards. VINIFICATION: Handmade in 2 and 4-tonne fermenters, the fruit is de-stemmed and fermented using natural yeast. Hand plunged up to 4 times daily to control temperature and maximise flavour and tannin extraction. Left on skins post fermentation for 15 days, then lightly pressed and transferred to French Oak barriques for 30 months.Only 630 x 6 packs produced. COLOUR: Deep dark red brick with a slight purple tinge. BOUQUET: Concentrated with blackberry spice with hints of chocolate and cedar. PALATE: Powerful Clare Valley Shiraz with rich mid-palate fruit with long grainy tannins, oak complexity and balance of acidity. FOOD MATCH: A delightful complement to strong cheeses and gamey meats.

Penfolds St Henri is one of Australia's greatest red wines. The Shiraz for St Henri is selected for subtlety and elegance and the finished wine has the structure complexity for extended bottle maturation. The 1991 is a classic St Henri vintage that is good to drink until 2022.
