A pioneer of the Australian wine industry, Jim Barry was responsible for shaping South Australia's Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world-class shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Bright currant and dark cherry fruit is flanked by fine, savoury tannin, giving the palate both intensity and directive structure. A persistent finish displaying distinctive Coonawarra cassis fruit and mouth-coating, chalky tannins.

Attractive aromas of ripe blackcurrant, dark berry and subtle mint integrate with complex maturation characters of toasty, vanillan oak.

Coonawarra is a very special place. It doesn’t share the relentless dry heat of the Adelaide summer, being much more temperate. It also has the excellent free-draining terra rossa soils that make it perfect for grape-growing. Bright plum in colour, Penfolds Bin 169 Cabernet Sauvignon displays delicate notes of mint and blackcurrant, with a more savory bouquet of semi-dried tomatoes and fruit chutney at the end. A hint of oak and spice adds extra warmth. On the palate a flavour-wheel of spearmint, milo powder, chocolate and black liquorice.
