Birchwood Wine Cylinder. A Chardonnay from a cool climate vineyard on the Campaspe River, bordering the renowned Bendigo and Heathcote wine regions. This vibrant wine displays a fusion of stone fruit flavours with crisp overtones. It’s bright acidity is harmoniously supported by sophisticated French oak integration.

The Malabar Chardonnay grapes are grown on the 50 year old, low yielding vines found in the H5 Block of Leogate Estates Brokenback Vineyard in The Lower Hunter Valley. The wine is a vibrant, fresh expression Hunter Valley Chardonnay with a mix of peach and pear flavours, softened on the palate by carefully used French oak barrels. A component of the wine underwent wild fermentation adding complexity and giving the wine a lingering finish.

The Calais Cuvée is made from 3 vintages of this premium wine, created in the classic Calais style of big, buttery Chardonnay. Extra years in older barrels has intensified the flavour profile of this wine. A well balanced and mature wine, designed to be enjoyed now. This wine shows all the benefits of malolactic fermentation in oak with extended maturation.

This very rare wine is a co fermented “field blend” of the rare German variety Schönburger and our 1974 planting of Riesling. There are intense aromas of fruit and flower. Flavours abound, with Jasmine, gardenia, ripe grapefruit, honeydew, rockmelon, hints of wet-stone minerality and phenomenally clear golden delicious apple notes! Inherent fruit sweetness is balanced by refreshing acidity ensuring a crisp, fresh finish - it’s like standing in a field of daisies in summer, with a fresh fruit salad.
