The 2023 Bursaria Pinot Noir marks a quiet triumph for Henschke’s Lenswood vineyard, harvested just a few years after the devastating Cudlee Creek bushfire. Prue and Stephen Henschke’s regeneration of this Adelaide Hills site has led to a release that’s not only poised and varietally pure, but also deeply expressive of its restored landscape. Made entirely from pinot noir grown on steep, cool-climate slopes, it opens with lifted aromatics of red cherry, wild strawberry and bergamot, layered with tomato stem, thyme and forest floor. The palate is bright and silken, with fine tannins framing a vibrant core of raspberry and morello cherry. Matured in seasoned French oak barriques for 18 months, it carries both finesse and quiet persistence. The Reserva Tempranillo blend from iconic Riojan producer, Marqués de Riscal is made from fruit sourced from outstanding vineyard sites that are in excess of 15 years of age. This fruit is able to withstand the lengthy maturation process in oak due to the fine, complex tannin and acid structure. The resulting wine is classically savoury with notes of dark berries and toasty oak. The palate is long and rounded with interesting hint of spice.

Fred Pizzini grew up in Italy and is bringing the taste of his homeland to the Australian dining table. His Sangiovese is one of the best examples in the country, with spicy, savoury fruit hiding a vein of mouth watering acid that is a hallmark of the variety. Delicious now - and will get better with bottle age!
