Quintessentially McLaren Vale, the wine has a rich, full palate brimming with dark berry fruits, coffee and spice characteristics finishing with soft, lengthy tannins. Utilising the winemaking talents of Larry Cherubino and over 40 years of winemaking experience himself, Robert Oatley lends his name to this McLaren Vale Shiraz that has all the hallmarks of an exceptional regional example. Matured for 10 months in French oak and sourced from fruit from around the sub-region of Blewitt Springs, this Shiraz is opulent, fleshy and textured with flavours of blueberries and spice with a lingering, soft finish.

For well over a century Shiraz has played the main role in producing wines of outstanding quality, depth and longevity at Kay Brothers. The Basket Pressed Shiraz continues this tradition. The vineyards sourced for this wine have a predominately eastern exposure. Soil varies from sandy loam at the top of the hill to heavier loam and clay as it transcends down the hill towards the creek. The dry climate forces the vine roots, ranging from 918 years, to delve into the complex underlying geology consisting of quartz and ironstone gravels, weathered and calcareous sandstone, siltstone and limestone.

The Maxwell Silver Hammer Shiraz delivers all the hallmarks that make the combination of this variety and the McLaren Vale region so famous. The palate is luscious and shows generous fruit flavours of raspberry and plum and complex notes of vanilla bean and dried herbs. File silky tannins give structure and length, creating a seamless and approachable wine.

In the glass: Deep red. On the nose: Lifted aromas of tar, espresso and black plum. On the palate: Full-bodied, round and smooth with a rich, dense core of dark fruit and a warm mouth-feel. Quite deluxe with lovely structure and depth of flavour with ripe tannins and well judged oak providing support.

Pirramimma Shiraz is full-fruited and powerful, with sweet plum and mocha along with cinnamon notes and dark chocolate which are all typical regional characters of McLaren Vale.

The 2017 Estate Shiraz beautifully demonstrates the mixture of fruitfulness and savory elements that our 50-year-old vineyards provide. The nose shows cherry, bitter chocolate, and aniseed spice. The palate is bright and full-bodied with succulent tannins and great concentration of fruit. A classic example from a superb vintage.
