This medium to full bodied wine has a lovely balance and style in true Church Block character. Church Block was the first wine the late Greg Trott produced under the Wirra Wirra label back in 1972. He took the name from one of the original vineyards, which runs next to the small Bethany Church (Est 1854) across the road from Wirra Wirras century old ironstone cellars. Michael Fragos grew up in McLaren Vale, and spent 14 years at Tatachilla before taking over at Chapel Hill in 2004. A three-time ‘Bushing King’, Michael has also been named best winemaker on the planet! James Halliday notes that his “wine quality is unfailingly excellent” . This one has an expressive nose of blackcurrant, bay leaf cigar box and chocolate. McLaren Vale - A region renowned for generous full flavoured reds!Grapes are picked on both colour and flavour development. Picked at night to enable a cold onset to fermentation. Once crushed they are then fermented for 7-10 days at around 20 degrees, in small batches using neutral yeast, to allow regional fruit expression.The ferment is then pressed using an airbag press. A soft pressing is used, so we do not extract the bitter tannin, producing a fruit driven style of wine. After we have pressed the wine, it is allowed to go through natural malolactic fermentation. Following maturation the wine is blended and prepared for bottling.Dark brick red lifted aromas of dark plum, mocha and subtle oak characters.Dark berry and plum fruit flavours complimented by spicy overtones. A full, round, generous palate with good structure and length, finishing with firm, fine tannins. Aged in a combination of French and American oak for 12 months.

Ben Riggs has hand-crafted a delicious Shiraz Cabernet Merlot blend here that pays homage to the three-spiked prickle that can be found in the McLaren Vale region and the fact that it's hard to ignore. This unctuous red blend is also extremely hard to ignore with its seamless varietal integration that produces a wine full of richness and opulence. Ripe, dark berry fruits courtesy of Merlot along with spice elements from the Shiraz and a firm, but balanced structure from the Cabernet all come together superbly.

We managed to secure the last stocks of this Trophy and double Gold-medal winning vintage. In the winery: Selected bunches were hand picked in the third week of March and gently crushed into open top fermenters.In the glass: Vibrant, dense red black.On the nose: Appealing mix of super-ripe black fruit with classic mint herbaceousness. On the palate: Excellent balance with a powerful black fruit core cloaked with bright spice and herb and underlying cedary oak.

This class cabernet has deep red colour with purple hues indicating the freshness and quality to come. Aromas of leafy mint with complex capsicum and cedar with ripe berry notes adding complexity with firm tannins and well balanced acid leading to a long finish.
