JEAN-PAUL BRUN Terres Dorees Cote De Brouilly, Beaujolais

Built in the 16th century and situated in Barsac at about 30 kilometers from Bordeaux, Château Massereau was acquired by the Chaigneau family in 2000. A 19 hectare estate with 10 planted (6,600 – 7000 plants/hectare) in the Barsac, Graves and Bordeaux Superieur appellations. Château Massereau Bordeaux Supérieur 2018 is a blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc & 10% Petit Verdot. Vinified in concrete vats for 4-8 weeks naturally without additional yeast, finings, filtration and low sulphite. The resulting wine is garnet in colour with an intense nose of black fruit, with hints of sweet spice and pepper.

This red from France is a great introduction to Bordeaux without the expensive price tag. A deep purple colour with hint of spice and vegetal aromas. The palate is supple and round with notes of plum, leather and spice with a rich, persistent finish.

From pure Gamay, these wines have freshness with a hint of minerality, ruby-red colour and red berry scents on the nose. The style is bright, packed with berry flavours, with hints of black pepper over a base of ripe tannins. Brouilly is the largest and furthest south of the Beaujolais crus. It has a good south eastern exposure, at the bottom of the Saône Valley at an altitude of 200 to 300 metres. The subsoil consists of granite debris and blue-tinged schist. This also ranked the full 5 stars in my abbreviated-for-iPad rating system! It is the freshest of the Beaujolais Crus and the Parisian's favourite. Fresh and fruity, light and supple, it has a pleasant aroma of violets. The true wine-lovers drink it young when the Gamay still possesses its entire aroma.

Unusual and elegant wine... A 100% unfiltered Syrah, not aged in barrels, a pure and clean juice. This wine is named after François Massol's parents, the chief winemaker at Domaine de Sauzet. Pure and raw, this powerful red wine is the perfect expression of the Languedoc Syrah. The nose remind liquorice and black pepper. On the palate we have silky tannin and black fruits with a long aftertaste.
