When Bill Samuels, Jr., decided to create a new bourbon, he was looking for a companion to his father's signature Maker's Mark that would help leave his own mark on the family legacy. He made it a personal challenge to give bourbon lovers a bourbon that could be held on the tongue and featured much more of the natural vanilla and caramel notes he admired in the original. He and his team began working with the Independent Stave Company, experimenting with special barrels, different wood varieties and varying levels of char. After many tries, Bill found the answer in placing 10 seasoned, seared virgin French oak staves into a barrel of fully matured Maker’s Mark. These special staves were on file with the Independent Stave Company as “profile 46,” and so Maker’s Mark 46 was born, leaving its own mark as a first-of-its-kind bourbon.

An innovative approach to twice-barreled bourbon creates the rich and colorful flavor of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. Starting with the 2020 edition, all future master’s collections will focus on modern innovation by Morris and McCall. “The name Very Fine Rare Bourbon is a nod to the descriptors used by our ancestors to auction highly-aged Bourbon barrel lots,” Morris said. “While Woodford Reserve will always honor the past, this Master’s Collection is about the present and future.” The bourbon includes liquid from barrels that are 17 years old and date to 2003, the year Chris Morris was named Master Distiller.
