Upon much deliberation, our overall masked winner revealed a style and character that provided us with a fairly clear cut insight into the modern day advances of a region etched in history and tradition. Cosme Palacio consistently produces one of our favourite Riojas that always offers incredible value for money. Produced predominantly from Tempranillo grown in cool, relatively high altitude sites, this is modern Rioja that's bright and ready to go thanks to a touch of bottle age. It's medium bodied with fine tannins and juicy in the mouth. Black fruits dominate the flavour profile with some delicate cedar and earthy notes adding complexity to a delicious example from this much loved region.

VINEYARDS = Our vineyards are located in the South-eastern part of Spain, between 700 and 800 meters above sea level, in the inland of Albacete. The weather here is mild and dry with a perfect temperature range between day and night. The vines are cultivated on the steep slopes of low fertility soil composed by reddish brown sandy clay soil, rich in limestone and chalk, ideal for growing healthy, high quality grapes.VINIFICATION = The grapes are harvested by night to preserve the aroma and to avoid oxidation. Soft stalk stripping and crushing, fermentation without skins at a low temperature, 16 Degrees C, for ideal colour and taste.COLOUR = Salmon.BOUQUET = Bright and clean, intense. A delicate aroma, very fruity with notes of cherry and raspberry.Medium body, intense, well balanced, soft andround, very long in the mouth. An incredible Spanish Wine from Ribera del Duero, the Burgundy of Spain.Made with 100% "Tinto Fino" grapes and matured for 6 months in French Oak barrels. This wine is made with grapes from single estate vineyards with following a criteria of ecological production.Once in the cellar, the grapes in 16 kg crates go to the table where they are selected and chosen, separating any cluster that does not meet the stringent criteria of maturity, health and cleanliness.The destemming is done directly over each tank, so the grapes arrive intact to the fermentation vessel where the maceration is performed. Even the yeasts for alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation bacteria are indigenous, existing naturally in the skins of the grapes themselves. As a result the wine transfer the same ecological character getting the title of Ecological Wine.In the nose you find a very well structured wine with some creamy and toasted barrel aging touches. In your mouth wait for a smooth entry with ripe velvety tannins. Long, elegant, fresh and very well balanced across palate.This is a great wine that definitely is worth to try. The best Vintage in 2011 got a stunning score of 91 points in 'Wine Spectator' and since then this wine earned a prestigious position in Ribera del Duero as a high quality wine..

The same philosophy is adopted by the viticulturalist - his wife, Melissa. Gemtree Vineyards are located just 35 kilometres south of Adelaide in the heart of the McLaren Vale wine region. Its considered one of the best regions in the world to grow grapes thanks to its ancient soils and Mediterranean climate plus cooling sea breezes from the nearby Gulf of St.Vincent. Soils in the area range from shallow red brown earths over limestone to deep fertile clay soils. Gemtree Vineyards comprises 260 acres under vine planted with Chardonnay, Verdelho, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. Working in tandem with his wife Melissa in the vineyard and taking a minimal interventionist approach to the winemaking is integral to Mike, to allow the wines to simply express the region in every glass.

Blue Rock Wines 2017 Eden Valley TempranilloOur cool-climate Eden Valley Tempranillo is ruby-red in colour with bright purple hues. The aromas of cola and black cherry indulge the nose. Enticing fruit flavours of black cherry, blueberries and boysenberries coat the soft velvety palate. Hints of chocolate make this wine reminiscent of Cherry ripe. This Spanish wine varietal pairs beautifully with tapas, marinated mushrooms, olives, chorizo sausage and even BBQ prawns. It doesnt get any more Mediterranean than that.
