David and Jenny Jones are making wine with tremendous depth of fruit flavour, reflecting the relatively low-yielding but very well- maintained vineyards in The Pyrenees. Their flagship Dalwhinnie Eagle Shiraz is a perfect example of this. Pristine and fresh with more of everything providing plenty of stuffing, redcurrant, blackberry and sage characters.

McLaren Vale is well known for its ability to make full bodied red wines, in particular concentrated Shiraz, and this deluxe wine is a perfect example.Deep, dark red. Plum, cherry compote and cedar oak aromas. Ripe, dense and juicy with loads of dark berry, plum and rum and raisin chocolate, ripe velvety tannins and toasty coconut oak. A single-block Shiraz from 80-year-old vines. Hand harvested. The fruit, spends 10 days on skins, hard pressings removed. Moved to puncheons for malolactic conversion & maturation, 14 months on oak. An approachable, yet complex, drop. A nose of Red berries, earthy tones & baking spice. A full & fleshy palate of plums, berries, dried spice, & chocolate with robust tannin structure.

Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz is a very powerful, concentrated cellaring style with plenty of fruit richness, chocolaty tannins and underlying malty oak. The 1.6 hectare Block 6, which forms part of the Kay Brother's larger 22 hectare Amery Vineyards, was originally a "pumpkin patch" of old bush vines. The Block 6 fruit is batch-vinified in three to five tonne traditional open fermenters originally built by the Kay Brothers in 1895/6. Some parcels are hand plunged while others are fermented under header boards. At completion of fermentation the wine is drained and basket pressed into a combination of one-third each new, one year old and two year old American and Eastern European oak. Maturation takes place for around 18 to 24 months before assemblage and bottling under screw cap.

A reference to Chester Osborn and his trio of daughters, as well as a play on the blend of shiraz with roussanne, viognier and marsanne that are co-fermented. The wine makes a very spicy first impression with rich red and dark plums, as well as blackcurrants and a darker, iodine-like edge. The palate has very complex textural quality with impressively dense, ripe dark plums and blackberries. Very intense and powerful with such complexity in terms of aroma, flavour and texture. Really impressive and the most refined tannin quality in the d'Arenberg range. Drink over the next decade or more. Closure: screwcap. Price: $200. Rating: 97/100.

This is a smart wine. It feels very harmonious, there's fruit intensity but it's not *too* fruity, there's present oak but it's not *too* overpowering, there's spice and tannin but they're not *too* drying. Everything has been worked into this classy number in thoughtful moderation and the result is a wine greater than the sum of its parts. From the well known, hand-tended, vineyards of the Willunga sub-region of McLaren Vale, picked in the (widely lorded) year of 2021 - it's safe to say we were holding this one to a pretty high standard. Well, this wine exceeded even our lofty expectations. Juicy dark mulberry and black cherry, vibrant spiced plum and chocolate characters are expressed with both intensity and complexity. Subtle, but ever present, oak characters manifest themselves in slight chocolate and vanilla notes along with fine grained tannins and build to a silky, spice driven finish. Happy to sit in the cellar for 15+ years, but why delay happiness right?

In 2024, we’re celebrating our fiftieth vintage with the release of a new flagship wine.A single block wine that epitomises our meticulous approach to everything we do. Every aspect has been carefully considered to ensure The Devil is the most characterful and expressive wine possible. With just eight barrels produced, The Devil really is in the detail. Gentle and patient winemaking is preferred to ensure that the wine expresses the unique site characters of the House Block. The hand harvested grapes were gently crushed and then fermented in an open fermenter and hand plunged to facilitate subtle tannin extraction. After 12 days on skins the fermenter was basket pressed and the free run and pressing fractions were combined. The wine was then aged for 20 months in 100% tight grained French oak. The proportion of new oak was kept low to encourage the continued expression of the characters that are exclusive to the vineyard site. To preserve purity and character the wine is made with minimal additions and is allowed to clarify naturally without the use of fining or filtration. Opulent layers of dark berry fruit sprinkled with roasted spices. A silky mouthfeel with moreish complexity, sublime balance and graceful poise. A wine to celebrate our heritage and herald our future.
