Re-tasted on 07/06/2022 Magnificent colour displaying a pitch black core with a very deep black dark red hue. Pronounced black cherry, liquorice and black plum aromas are overlaid by scorched earth and smoked meats followed by spicy vanillin cedar and pepper notes. Tightly built rich black cherry and liquorice flavours dominate over inky earth, lightly scorched vanillin cedar, dried meats and blackpepper. Dry grippy finish with tightly grained tannins. Rich yet elegant and muscular in its feel. Good underlying power with a long black cherry, liquorice, smoky vanillin cedar, dried meats and earthy pepper aftertaste. Cellar 8-10 years. Alc. 14.5%

d'Arenberg Thunderstep Shiraz

A founding member of the First Families of Australian Wine, d’Arenberg was established in 1912, when Joseph Osborn funded his new winery by selling his beloved racehorses. Thunderstep was one of them. An imposing, powerful race horse and father to Footbolt, the pride of Joseph Osborn’s stable (and now the name of one of the estate’s most iconic and ‘original’ reds). Today, the colourful Chester Osborn (below), fourth generation, is at its helm, and it “has kept its 100-year-old heritage while moving into the 21st century with flair and elan” (Halliday). It boasts one of the world’s most innovative cellar door experiences and an unparalleled, exciting range. Thunderstep is a superb addition. This vintage boasts aromas of black pepper, spice and red berries, and a seductive palate of dark fruits, earthy character, and long, spicy, mineral finish. It sings of its McLaren Vale roots. Vineyard This Estate owned single vineyard really is the epitome of what defines one of the greatest vineyards in Australia, where the famous Black Bay of Biscay Clay soil ensures fantastic depth of colour and concentration. Positioned at about 120m above sea level and 8kms inland this North/ South facing vineyard is in the heart of McLaren Vale. We pride ourselves in sustainable viticulture practices and having true respect for the value of our vineyards and the fruit they create. Monitoring and measuring the vines is a crucial part of maintaining fruit quality of this level with a key focus being on the soil health and how this impacts the vine, the fruit and in turn the wine and the experience. The fruit for this wine is picked a little earlier to ensure a slightly lower alcohol level. Winery In the winery The Descendant of Squid Ink Shiraz fruit is treated with utmost respect, ensuring quality from start to finish. With a 2 day cold soak prior to a slow cool fermentation for gentle extraction colour, flavour and tannin extraction are closely monitored with different fermentation cap management applied accordingly. Following fermentation, the wine is then matured in a special selection of the finest 4 year old seasoned American oak Hogshead (300L) oak barrels for 9 months. Maturation 9 Months in well-seasoned 4 year old American Oak, Hogshead (300L) oak barrels. Colour Deep red with vibrant purple hues. Nose Deep dark fruits with some black olive, earthy complexity entice the senses followed by complementing dusty oak characters. Palate Fresh vibrant fruit coats the mouth, complimenting the gentle, soft furry tannins and spice that line the mouth and leave a lasting impression. Cellaring Drink now or cellar for 7+ years.
