Cosme Palacio Cosecha Rioja
Upon much deliberation, our overall masked winner revealed a style and character that provided us with a fairly clear cut insight into the modern day advances of a region etched in history and tradition. Cosme Palacio consistently produces one of our favourite Riojas that always offers incredible value for money. Produced predominantly from Tempranillo grown in cool, relatively high altitude sites, this is modern Rioja that's bright and ready to go thanks to a touch of bottle age. It's medium bodied with fine tannins and juicy in the mouth. Wirra Wirra Sparrow's Lodge Shiraz
Sitting proudly next to the iconic Woodhenge gate at Wirra is a classic Aussie residence. Originally built after severe storms destroyed the winery buildings in 1940, the then owners, the Sparrows, built this residence with left over materials from the fallen winery. Over the years, Sparrow's Lodge has been home to vintage vagabonds and the occasional winemaker and it is the good times that have been had within its walls that is celebrated in this wonderful, rich, vibrant and full-bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz.
Mesta Tempranillo Rose
The Mesta was a powerful association of shepherds in Medieval Castile, controlling the routes for herding sheep across the country. The Mesta vineyards are situated deep in the land of the Mesta. They are still passed over by flocks on their annual migration, a reminder of ancient rights and a cultural cue for continuing co-existence with nature. Trough organic viticulture and respectful winemaking, they produce wines of great purity, reflecting the unique personality of their land and grape varieties. An approachable but serious rosé wine, displaying great purity and typicity for the noble Tempranillo grape, in a lighter, more elegant style than most Spanish rosés. Pale strawberry colour, with intense and fresh berry aromas over subtle floral notes. Excellent concentration and a slightly off-dry finish, beautifully balanced by crisp acidity and a refreshing, savoury note. A perfect summer drink and a highly versatile food wine with pasta, rice dishes, vegetables and curries as well as stir-fried, spicier dishes.
