Houghton Gladstones Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful example of well established wineries in the Western Australian wine scene with access to some amazing vineyards sites within the Margaret River. On show here are marvelous aromas and flavours of bay leaf, black tea and some spicy mocha notes. Excitingly dense on palate with harmonious oak balance and impressive acidity. A brilliant wine.

Woodlands were one of the 'first wave' of wineries to set up in the Margaret River in the early 1970s and today that heritage is in the capable hands of Andrew and Stuart Watson, sons of the pioneering David. The Margaret Cabernet Merlot displays aromas of rosemary, leather and spice winding through blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. The palate is a reflection of the nose, and is bolstered by eucalypt, bay leaf and cranberry flavours.

The Woodlands Margaret is, true to its name, a realisation of all that is great about Margaret River, arguably Australias home of the Bordeaux style. Sourced from the Woodlands Vineyards in Wilyabrup this is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 8% Malbec. Considering the price of the Watson familys flagship, the Margaret offers truly outstanding value.

Our 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon has an intense crimson colour. The nose reveals aromas of mixed spices, dark fruits, and toasty French oak. The palate is deep and powerful; showing a ripe spectrum of red to dark fruits combined with star anise, clove, and allspice. The finish is incredibly long, with firm but fine tannins. We consider our 2010 vintage to be the most complete and complex Cabernet Sauvignon produced at Woodlands.

Spicy blend with some red plummy fruit characters to create a wine with full flavour and lovely length. Just right with slow-roasted veal and mushroom casserole.

This medium bodied and elegant wine is a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon enhanced with a small percentage of classic varietals. Following fermentation and extended maceration, the wine has been matured in new and old French oak barriques, producing a complex blend of Margaret River fruit characters including cassis, eucalypt, capsicum, mulberry and plum with secondary notes of chocolate and cedar. 93/100 James Halliday Wine Companion 2016.

From the Riversdale vineyard in the Frankland River sub-region of the Great Southern, this is a concentrated and fuller bodied shiraz with black fruit and black pepper aromas and an intriguing savoury palate revealing plush tannins and great length. Well suited to roasted red meat dishes.

'There's some pretty exciting wine coming from the Frankland River region in Great Southern. Not only are there some fine wineries and winemakers in the region, the climate seems to be well suited to growing premium wines. Not a bad combination, in my view. The establishment up the road in Margaret River should be very proud to see another WA region making such fantastic wines, but it should also be wary of complacency. Singlefile has been on my radar for a while and it seldom puts a foot wrong. This cabernet from the Riversdale Vineyard is further proof of its credentials. It's got just the right amount of fruit, balanced with some more complex savoury characters and a palate that has the tension between tannin, acid and fruit in complete harmony. The Raconteur is sourced from Carl Linder's 80 year old Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard located in the Barossa Valley; these old vines are hand harvested and made using traditional techniques by Vinaceous contract winemaker Elena Brooks (Dandelion Vineyards). The wine is matured in oak and selected by Vinaceous Winemakers Mike Kerrigan and Nick Stacy and sent to West Cape Howe Wine (WA) for finishing, fining, blending and bottling by Vinaceous. The Raconteur 'breaks the mold' for Barossa Cabernet; lush, rich and deep purple in colour with bright hues, the aroma leaps from the glass with violets and black berry and mocha notes. Ripe fleshy black currants and cassis complement the overall palate with intensity, weight, structure and texture. Along with lip-smacking tannins and fine oak nuances, the Raconteur can easily be enjoyed on immediate opening or be cellared in the short term.
