Native & Ancient explores the interaction between microbiology and human intervention, of man and nature, through a series of natural wines.The fruit for this wine is organically farmed from Block 2 on the Isabel Estate Vineyard. The wine is made in as natural a way as possible, harking back to ancient winemaking techniques. Hand picked, some carbonic fermentation, minimal plunging, racked from barrel and bottled without fining or filtration. No added sulphites. Deep red like your mum's lipstick. Bright and crunchy, yet dark and dense just like a bar of black forest chocolate. Red fruits mingle with dried herbs and tobacco. A raw expression of Pinot Noir.

The fruit for this vintage was hand selected from throughout the Southern Valleys, a Marlborough sub region renowned for growing Pinot Noir with great colour, intensity, excellent texture and ripeness. Discover aromas of dark cherry and bramble, with sweet spice and subtle toasty notes. On the palate, enjoy flavours of cherry compote, mocha and clove, with earthy smokey notes from careful barrel aging in French oak hogsheads.

Founded by Steve Planthaber, originally from Adelaide but post school left for the South Island of New Zealand. A move to Marlborough with his partner Kirsty Sutherland cemented his love for all things wine. Hard not to be inspired when meeting the Sutherland’s who were one of the pioneers of viticulture in the region, part of the original success of Cloudy Bay followed by establishing their own estate Dog Point. Steve was keen to find his own path and after 12 years running the production and operations at Cloudy Bay decided to begin his own wine brand, Settlement. Settlement, named after the stunning Amphitheatre single vineyard site in the Omaka Valley, is dedicated entirely to the production of organic, old vine single vineyard expressions of very special sites in Marlborough. Doesn’t get any more Southern Valley than this site, right in the Omaka Valley. High density of clay in this soil, lots of very good Pinot Noir sites in this sub-region. The Settlement Vineyard is the youngest of the 4 sites, planted in 2009 but a beautiful amphitheater, steep hillside vineyard, 4000 vines per hectare so high density plantings. North/North West facing. Hand picked/sorted, 70% destemmed/30% wholebunch. Short pre soak then wild fermented in tank, Pressed to barrel then aged for 18 months in French oak, 35% new. Francois Freres and Mercurey Oak. Complex, youthful, pure and fresh. Aromas and flavours of dark red cherry and fruit spices, there’s mineral rock and stone quality, plum and black currant. Delicious on the poalate, but still very youthful, a taut texture driven my tannins and acidity, but cushioned by a core of fruit that collectively will see this wine age well. Villa Maria Private Bin East Coast Pinot Gris 2022 vintage consists of a variety of parcels blended from different vineyard sites across several key regions. The warmer Gisborne region provides ripe fruit with soft acidity and the South Island provides freshness and aromatics. This Pinot Gris has fresh and intense aromatics of pear, red apple and honeysuckle, leading to a rich and textured mouthfeel and a delicious off-dry finish. Pair this wine with seafood, soft cheeses, salads and white meats.

Nose: subtle blend of pear, white peach, honeysuckle and lychee. Palate: gentle and soft mouth feel with medium intensity mid palate tending tropical which reflects the warm growing season. Low sugar, but a fruit- sweet balance point: the acidity is subtle and the wine dry. Expresses a fruit sweetness and generosity throughout the palate, starting out with hints of nectarine, peach and undertones of honey with a clean, dry, yet smooth finish. Winemaker’s Notes: Small parcels of Pinot Gris were fermented separately using a variety of yeasts, with fruit taken from a number of vineyard sites throughout Marlborough. Pressings were fermented in oak and kept separate from the free run which was tank fermented. We assembled the wine with the primary goal of balance given the subtle nature of Pinot Gris and the accentuation of primary clean fruit character, which is typically pears and light citrus. Winemaking Philosophy: all our growers are certified sustainable, with viticulturists bent on an organic and natural approach where possible. Dovetailing that nicely are our winemakers’ low intervention approach to their crafting of the grapes.
