High in the hills above Eden Valley, Pewsey Vale is one of Australia's great Riesling vineyards. This release shows the typical citrus and perfume aromas with a wonderful length of flavour. Always at a fantastic price, Pewsey Vale Riesling is still one of the best value-for-money wines across the entire range. Brilliant when young while it transforms over a decade or more to reveal a textured beauty to behold.

Conceived as a white wine development program, the Bin 51 Riesling soon became one of Penfolds' star performers. Eden Valley is an obvious choice of region for Riesling due to the higher altitude and cool climate. The wine offers delicate aromas of fresh cut apples and pears with a twist of lemon and minerality towards the end. A great deal of fruits and acidity makes for an interesting white wine with propensity to age gracefully if carefully cellared.

The wine is green and vibrant in appearance, with aromas of zesty lemon and grapefruit. An intense and generous palate, with lively citrus fruit and hints of talc. The wine finishes clean and dry with refreshing, long acidity. As is the case with all great Eden Valley Rieslings, mesh will age gracefully and reliably into a mature wine under the Stelvin closure.

For John Hughes, the attraction to Riesling is all encompassing. Growing up on a small vineyard in the Clare Valley, and going on to work with some of the brightest Riesling makers in the country before launching his own venture, John is never far away from his beloved grape. John makes classic Australian styles from carefully selected vineyards with an emphasis on purity and site reflection, as well as German-inspired expressions that balance acidity and sugar with singular precision.

Kerner... this evocative, textural treat is the brain child of August Herold. First planted in 1929 as a cross-breed of Riesling and Trollinger... fast forward 76 years to when Barossa bros Graeme & Michael Fechner had that elusive lightbulb moment - to plant Kerner cuttings in their northern Eden Valley vineyard whilst on a research trip in Germany. Their pioneering efforts, sparked our intrigue... we first dabbled with Kerner incorporating it into our aromatic field blend DÜFTE PUNKT, co-fermenting it with Riesling and Gewürztraminer from the same vineyard. After years of experimenting, we decided it was time to truly hero this germanic wunderkind, and push Kerner into the limelight with the release of the first KONTRAPUNKT in 2016... now Australia’s (and the Southern Hemisphere's) only Kerner. “Every now and then you encounter a wine that blows your mind. Each year we make a Reserve Riesling from the very best parcel of fruit out of one of our four Riesling blocks. For the fourth year in a row Block 7 was the stand out. Pale straw with a perfumed nose of rose petal and jasmine. Lime over zesty lemon on the palate with an acid backbone that delivers a long steely finish. A linear, austere Eden Valley Riesling of class. Drink now, but built to last.

In 1839, shortly after his arrival from England, Joseph Gilbert started building a fine homestead in Eden Valley and planted the region’s first grapevines in 1847. Like so many vineyards in the 1920s and 30s, Pewsey Vale fell into disuse but, thankfully, its potential was rediscovered. In 1961, pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons became aware his property had once incorporated the region’s earliest vineyard and shared his discovery with good friend, and vigneron Wyndham Hill-Smith. Hill-Smith needed no further persuasion – work soon began on re-establishing Pewsey Vale Vineyard. Initially, 56 hectares of Riesling were planted in contoured rows. The several remaining hectares of these vines continue to provide fruit for Pewsey Vale Vineyard The Contours Riesling. All plantings at Pewsey Vale Vineyard are propagated from the original 1847 vines. Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Leaping out of the glass are lime, citrus and orange rind scents trailed by some distinct talc and subtle steely mineral notes. Scrumptious lime and citrus fruits are underscored by crunchy acidity with notions of orange rind, chalky talc and flinty mineral elements lining the back half. Excellent intensity with a dry, tense and long snappy finish that’s laced with minerality. Drink over the next 6-8 years. Alc. 11.5%
