Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay displays an initial bouquet of slate and wet stone, with nuances of lightly roasted almonds. Subtle hints of citrus, shrouded by nectarine and nashi pear fruits. This Premier Cru is found mid-slope on the border between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. The slope is very regular at between 3% and 6% and the soil is clay limestone with red earth. The subsoil is a mixture of earth and flat volcanic rock which allows an extensive root system to develop. These conditions bring finesse and a touch of minerality to the wine.

Product Information: From a single 2.9ha plot of vines that goes from the very bottom of the slope to close to the top of the vineyard. This remarkable holding is arguably the most representative Les Clos from the whole vineyard. Vines here are aged mostly from 45-75 years of age. Expect an excellent richness and concentration from Les Clos, balanced with salinity and tension delivered with superb precision towards the finish. At least moderate patience will be required. Finish - Saline, Mouth Coating, Stony There is excellent richness and concentration to the markedly powerful larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate on the overtly stony, dry and compact finale.

For the team at Pierro, attention to detail in the vineyard is the factor which most clearly determines the success of the Pierro Chardonnay. It is sourced mainly from a north facing block on the south bank of the Willyabrup Brook which flows down the valley to the nearby Indian Ocean. Mike Peterkin believes that this natural watercourse provides a nourishing life-source for the vineyard. The mature vines (25 to 30 years old in 2010) are from high density plantings, 4,000 to 5,500 vines per hectare.
