This artwork "La Calavera Catrina" was a zinc etching originally created around 1910-1913 by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada who was known for his images of political and social satire. La Catrina soon became a symbolic figure during the time of the Mexican Revolution being associated with Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a pre-Colombian Meso-American festival of the observance of death and life that is celebrated on November 2nd in all of Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America. To this day, Catrina continues to be a significant figure and she is one of the symbols regarding the Day of the Dead however she is also found to be in many books, cartoons, posters, figurines and artwork spanning over 100 years and is globally recognisable.
