Penfolds began releasing the Bin 51 Riesling in the 1990s as part of the evolving white wine development program. The Eden Valley was chosen as the region for this Riesling due to the high altitude and cool climate that results in wines of intense aromatics and superb textural mouth feel. Flavours of apples, pears and bright citrus are commonplace. The Bin 51 has also shown a great propensity to age in the bottle extremely well.

This parcel was selected by winemaker Nick Badrice for its exceptional quality. Subtle French oak lifts natural stone fruit aromas, with melon notes balances by crisp acidity to give structure and a lengthy finish.

In the glass: Pale lemon green. On the nose: Lime, green apple and jasmine.On the palate: Bone dry and extremely mouth-watering with layers of lime, green apple and jasmine and faint chalky notes on the finish.

The wine is green and vibrant in appearance, with aromas of zesty lemon and grapefruit. An intense and generous palate, with lively citrus fruit and hints of talc. The wine finishes clean and dry with refreshing, long acidity. As is the case with all great Eden Valley Rieslings, mesh will age gracefully and reliably into a mature wine under the Stelvin closure.

On release, the wine has a complex aroma. Lifted yellow peach and nectarine characters dominate. Subtle spice and creamy characters add to the wines aromatic complexity. The palate is restrained and elegant. It displays the same fruit characters of peach and nectarine through-out. The mid and back palates are driven by a gentle line of lemon-like acid. Mountadam was first setup in 1972 by the late David Wynn, a pioneer of the wine industry an founder of Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Wynn made the winery famous on the back of superb cool climate wines, supported by his son Adam (who the winery is named after). Adam held onto the winery until 2002 when it was sold to luxury goods business LVMH. The winery returned to family hands again in 2006 when it was purchased by South Australian farmer and accountant David Brown and his wife Jenni. In late 2015 the Browns acquired the second High Eden vineyard established by Wynn. The two vineyards are dissected by High Eden road. The Brown family are keen to continue Wynn's vision to produce wines of elegance and structure. A focus on sustainable low input viticulture will guarentee the success of the vineyards into the future. From 2015, Helen McCarthy has steered the ship as Chief Winemaker.

For John Hughes, the attraction to Riesling is all encompassing. Growing up on a small vineyard in the Clare Valley, and going on to work with some of the brightest Riesling makers in the country before launching his own venture, John is never far away from his beloved grape. John makes classic Australian styles from carefully selected vineyards with an emphasis on purity and site reflection, as well as German-inspired expressions that balance acidity and sugar with singular precision.

Kerner... this evocative, textural treat is the brain child of August Herold. First planted in 1929 as a cross-breed of Riesling and Trollinger... fast forward 76 years to when Barossa bros Graeme & Michael Fechner had that elusive lightbulb moment - to plant Kerner cuttings in their northern Eden Valley vineyard whilst on a research trip in Germany. Their pioneering efforts, sparked our intrigue... we first dabbled with Kerner incorporating it into our aromatic field blend DÜFTE PUNKT, co-fermenting it with Riesling and Gewürztraminer from the same vineyard. After years of experimenting, we decided it was time to truly hero this germanic wunderkind, and push Kerner into the limelight with the release of the first KONTRAPUNKT in 2016... now Australia’s (and the Southern Hemisphere's) only Kerner. “Every now and then you encounter a wine that blows your mind. Langtons is proud to be first to market with the inaugural vintage of this Riesling, a selection from a very special part of the famous Contours vineyard. When it comes to Eden Valley Riesling, no name is greater than the Langtons Classified Contours Riesling from Pewsey Vale. The Contours vineyard was first planted in 1841, but the distinctive site we know today -- with vines planted along the contours of an Eden Valley hillside rather than in straight rows -- dates from the 1960s. From 1961 in fact, and this new wine comes from a single block of the oldest vines, planted in that year on a north-facing slope. The Contours Riesling is released with five years of bottle age. This new wine -- although almost equally ageworthy -- is a more approachable style and therefore suitable for release (like most other Rieslings) in the year following vintage. For many (or most) the 1961 Block Riesling will be indistinguishable from The Contours. The value here is obvious.
