In 2013, we decided to put aside some excellent wine to be released with bottling age for the first time in winery history. Cabernet Sauvignon seems to be the most obvious choice for aging purpose. Coonawarra had an excellent vintage in 2013, which was characterised by a warm, dry summer and then cool autumn. Summer ’73 and a rusty bulldozer rumbled into life, signalling the end of “The colony” and a distinct lowering of the Coonawarra skyline. For almost 90 years, families had flocked to Coonawarra to collect the bountiful fruits which grew on the famed red Terra Rossa soil. But as the favour of wine grew, the last fruit trees were felled and on a summer’s day in ’73, the last orchard was demolished. The end of an era, the last of the blockers and the last Sunday drive.

The Coonawarra region is a flat terrain, located on the Limestone coast in South Australia. Beneath this beautiful landscape lies a limestone ridge and contrasting soils which provide the perfect conditions for crafting great wine. On the nose, lifted raspberry, spice with subtle oak that leads to a generous mouth full of dark berry flavours. Long gentle, puckery tannins provides a long finish. Dense inky black heart with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Streaming out of the glass are intense blackcurrant and mulberry aromas which are complimented by hints of red liquorice, cedary tobacco characters and bay leaf notes. Rich yet gorgeously refined the medium to full bodied palate is layered with ripe blackcurrant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits which meld into a back drop of cedary tobacco, subtle earth and bay leaf characters. Fine grained seamlessly integrated tannin structure. Understated in its power, it possesses wonderful finesse finishing long and elegant. Drink over the next 6-8 years. Alc. 14.5%

Coonawarra Cabernet at its finest, showcasing the house style of Power and Elegance from St Hugo. Floral and ripe fruit, with balanced fine tannins in support of a generous regional and varietal fruit profile. Generous and structural at its core with varietally assertive tannins complimented by a floral dark red fruit spectrum, enhanced with subtle refined oak.

'Black Label' Cabernet Sauvignon, which was first vintaged in 1954, has evolved markedly over the decades. It is arguably Australia's most recognised Cabernet Sauvignon, and has more than any other, helped define Coonawarra. The wine is matured in new and seasoned French oak for 12 to 18 months. A classic Coonawarra Cabernet with pristine dark berry/ cassis aromas, fine grained tannins and underlying savoury nuances, it develops into a rich, chocolaty wine with age. In a super vintage, this wine can look astonishingly like a 2nd or 3rd growth Bordeaux with its pure cassis aromas and cedary complexity. The Parker Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is made in a riper, more generous style to its peers, yet with enough restraint to display the distinct varietal and regional characteristics. Offerings of ripe blackberry and damson plums, wafts of warm earth, iodine, mint and black olives. The palate shows a lot of restraint and freshness, fuller bodied not big though with determined tannins. A solid performer not just a backup singer.
