It has a lovely bouquet of dark berries and mocha with a soft fruit-driven palate of red currants and plums. The palate is soft, juicy and lingering. A number of parcels are sourced for this blend, once the grapes have reached optimal ripeness the fruit is harvested during the cool of night for delivery to the winery. The fruit is destemmed and sent to static fermenters for a long cool fermentation. Once pressed off skins the wine is pressed off to oak barrels for 9 months maturation of 9. Hailing from Cariñena, neighbour to Rioja, in northeast Spain, picked at peak of ripeness, it's bursting with silky ripe cherry and summer berry fruit. One of the oldest wine regions of Spain, Cariñena lies just southeast of Rioja, a land of ancient low-yield vines. Most of its vineyards nurture native varieties Garnacha, but this red shows its winemakers can excel equally well with international stars, including Merlot. This grape ripens to perfection in the arid rocky soils and hot sunshine. Mirlo Merlot is a smooth, full-of-fruit red for easy sipping. Served at a cool room temperature, it's a great party wine, and tasty with chicken, veggie kebabs or frittata.

When properly grown and blended Merlot is one of the great grape varieties capable of producing rich, well-structured wines. The Mount Lawson Merlot explores the full possibilities of the grape with dark cherry and plum aromas leading to generous flavours of red tree fruits and a soft mid-palate redolent of blackberry. The finish is long and satisfying with hints of vanilla.

In 1961, at just 21 years of age, George Fistonich leased five acres of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland and started off with just an acre of vines. George made his first wine under the name Villa Maria in 1962 with grapes harvested from this block. Today Villa Maria is New Zealand's most awarded winery. Villa Maria Private Bin Hawkes Bay Rose 2022 vintage is a beautiful salmon pink colour. The nose has bright floral aromas leading to a palate of red fruits, spice, and strawberries.
