Champagne Laherte Freres Blanc de Blancs Non-Vintage

Louis Roederer Brut Champagne

Champagne Laherte Frères Les Longues Voyes Blanc de Noirs (Disg. Nov )

Disgorged November 2022. Les Longues Voyes translates as ‘the long way’, referring not only to the 25 kilometres that you need to travel from the Laherte estate to arrive at the vineyard but also to the wine’s extended aging: 18 months in barrel and a further 18-20 months in bottle. The fruit is sourced from a single hectare of biodynamic vines in Chamery, Montagne de Reims, owned by a good friend of Aurélien Laherte’s. The 35-year-old vines are rooted in clay and silt over a limestone base. The wine was made from a single four-tonne press of grapes, which fermented naturally and matured in old Clos des Epeneaux and Leroux barrels. There was no malolactic conversion, and the dosage was 4 g/L. So, the estate now has two vintage Blanc de Noirs released at the same time: Les Vignes d’Autrefois from Meunier and Les Longues Voyes from Pinot Noir. The first comes from a chalky subsoil and the second from limestone, and it is fascinating to compare the different structures that result. Fans of Pinot Noir on limestone should move to the front of the queue.

Maison Mumm RSRV Cuvée Lalou

The Mumm RSRV Lalou 2006 cuvee is a legendary champagne, blended from 100% Grand Cru wines. It is sourced exclusively from the Maison Mumm vineyards, its historic and emblematic plots. Of the 12 specific plots in the Maison Mumm vineyard, equally distributed between Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, seven were selected for the unique blend of RSRV Lalou 2006 (Les Bionnes, Les Crupots, Les Briquettes, Les Perthes, Hannepés, Les Rochers, Les Houles). These seven Grand Cru wines were previously pressed separately, then vinified one by one. In line with Maison Mumm’s uncompromising standards, a 10-year aging period and a dosage of 6 grams per liter fully reveal their complex and elegant aromas. Pure gold in colour the nose is an elegant mineral departure, opening out into sweet pastry notes. Aromas of candied lemon and pear marmalade, complemented by gourmet notes of vanilla, with hints of toast and brioche. The palate has a rounded, powerful attack. As the wine develops, it demonstrates great length on the palate, combining fullness and freshness.

Champagne Laherte Frères Les Rouges Maisons Extra Brut Non-Vintage

The acidity is firmer here than the Meunier Blanc de Noirs (Vignes d'Autrefois), with a chewy austerity typical of limestone in Champagne. Regardless, it is fine and poised on the palate with impressive balance, racy freshness and fine chalk-infused bitters that drive a long, sapid finish—an outstanding Blanc de Noirs.

Champagne Larmandier Bernier 1er Cru Rosé de Saignée (Base 19. Disg. Sep ) Non-Vintage

Disgorged September 2021. The Rosé de Saignée is drawn mostly from what are thought to be the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Vertus (45 years old), and one of this village’s very last 100% Pinot vineyards. In fact, the vineyard is a co-planted blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Gris, with both varieties contributing to this wine. The grapes are allowed to macerate for a period before the juice is drawn off, providing the wine’s colour and much of its body and flavour. This saignée technique is now rare in Champagne, primarily as it is a demanding method of vinification and requires grapes with an excellent degree of maturity. Most rosé in Champagne is made with the addition of a little red wine. Vive la différence! As with all Larmandier’s wines, it fermented naturally. Part of this cuvée was raised in a Nomblot concrete egg and part in stainless steel. More recently, Larmandier has also been trialling amphorae designed by Mizel Riouspeyrous from Domaine Arretxea. It’s one of Champagne’s wow wines, repeatedly compared to a Chambolle-Musigny. In short, it’s a Champagne that can stop drinkers in their tracks. The 2019 is an exceptional release built on energy and crystalline tension. Although it drinks beautifully on its own, it has the depth to go with smoked or grilled salmon. Yes, do that—you won’t regret it! This bottling was disgorged with a discreet dosage of 3 g/L. It is a superb release that will be even better with a year or two in the cellar.
