Chateau Yaldara 1847 Grand Pappy's Barossa Valley Shiraz

When it comes to the quality and price ($320 a bottle!) of this outstanding Shiraz, the term Super Premium is an understatement. The story of this winery began in, you guessed it, 1847. After the proclamation of a land grant by the Governor for the historic Rowland Flat property, Bavarian immigrant Johann Gramp planted what was the first commercial vineyard in the Barossa Valley. 1847 winery now encompasses some 200 acres of premium estate vineyards. “There's a bright, spicy crunch to the best of '17 Barossa shiraz. This is a refreshingly medium-bodied style laced with red cherries, greengage plums and a hint of black pepper. Tangy acid line and a fine tannin grid carry a finish of impressive persistence... 95pts” (Halliday Wine Companion, Tyson Stelzer).

Schild Estate Three Springs Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz

There's lots of latent power and fruit depth on display here but nothing feels heavy or overdone. 96pts.” (Dave Brookes, The Halliday Wine Companion). “Gosh, this is a good wine... from the first aromas of perfumed dark fruits... the plush plummy fruit characters come together with spice and dark chocolate rolling effortlessly off the palate as it gathers momentum to a long finish. Classy wine here. 96pts”. (Ken Gargett WinePilot). The Three Springs vineyard is where the original Schild family homestead is located. situated on historic Narrow Road in Rowland Flat, this vineyard sits at 380 metres above sea level. Vineyards at this altitude are traditionally much lower yielding and produce fruit of the highest quality.

This captures the region, the season and the variety as well as you could expect. It’s concentrated and powerful, and yet there’s a high degree of elegance. Dark, plummy, spicy notes with a little roasted coffee, and just a lick of oak on the finish… 95pts”. Sam Kim (WineOrbit) calls it “wonderfully ripe and inviting, featuring aromas of blackberry, cake spice, vanilla, toasty oak, and mocha. On the palate, it is concentrated, with outstanding weight and rich texture. With a beautifully structured profile and polished tannins, it fills the mouth with delicious flavours, leading to a long and satisfying finish. 96pts”.
