This sterling-value red fizz has really grown up, with a more-ish premium mouthful of sun-ripened vibrant blackberries now tuned with liquorice and white pepper notes. Ravishing!

Melded purple and quite deep. Righteously rustic. Dark and red berry fruits with a savoury and green herbal edge. Violet flowers, aniseed, bay leaf and star anise. A background of soft and drying oak that helps extend the savoury fruit aromatics. Rich and rounded with hints of the earth and of good hardwood joinery. Bright, pert, and fresh red fruits. A chewy, meaty and savoury red wine then ensues, with a wonderful three-way balance amongst the cheerful yet still restrained fruit flavours, the soft and gentle yet present tannins, and the beautifully and quietly persistent acid. Rounded and mouth-filling, yet long and ultimately dry. This is a grown-up’s red wine, hence think of grown-up foodstuffs to drink it alongside. A fava bean and octopus stew, complete with too much smoked paprika and some slices of fried chorizo. A smoked mackerel? We would. Oh, and this bottle suits four people with four appetites and four free lunchtime diary spots.

With the Southern Ocean coastline just minutes from Gemtree's vineyards, the maritime influence runs deep at this winery. Couple this with the certified organic vineyards that are tended by hand and you have a perfect recipe for a bold and full-bodied Shiraz; the Dragon's Blood McLaren Vale Shiraz. Choosing sites that offer the greatest varietal expression, concentration and finesse, the wine then saw maturation in French oak of sizes ranging from barriques (225L) to puncheons (500L) for 12 months. The result is a foreboding Shiraz that displays notes of blueberry, blackcurrant, aniseed and balancing earthen touch. Ideal served on its own to fully appreciate the rich and complex flavours but also at home when paired with French cutlets and slow cooked duck.

Ben Riggs has hand-crafted a delicious Shiraz Cabernet Merlot blend here that pays homage to the three-spiked prickle that can be found in the McLaren Vale region and the fact that it's hard to ignore. This unctuous red blend is also extremely hard to ignore with its seamless varietal integration that produces a wine full of richness and opulence. Ripe, dark berry fruits courtesy of Merlot along with spice elements from the Shiraz and a firm, but balanced structure from the Cabernet all come together superbly.

The Red Knot Shiraz has truly come into its own, confirming its place among Australia’s all-time best value wines. The rich blackberry core has softened beautifully, now woven with layers of mellow red fruits, stewed plum, and gently integrated spice. Time has brought out even more complexity – the aniseed notes are deeper, the texture silkier, and the finish longer. A mature, expressive Shiraz that rewards the wait – and still a delight for lovers of the style.

Deep Ruby red with a vibrant purple hue. Fresh, lively aromas of mulberry, blueberry, boysenberry, milk chocolate and spiced plum with an overlay of white pepper. A rich palate with dark berries, plums and cherry dancing on the palate leading towards the mid palate of chocolate, aniseed, white pepper. Silky tannins and French oak flavours aid in the long finish.

Medium-bodied with seductive flavours of blueberries, cherries and dark plums. The French oak maturation provides subtle savoury, spice characters with a pleasing soft and silky texture to the mid palate. A long, persistent finish makes this a great wine for Spanish or games dishes.

Church Block first appeared back in 1972 under the watchful eye of Greg Trott and was taken by one of the original vineyards that ran alongside the small Bethany Church, across the road from Wirra Wirra's old ironstone cellars. Over the last 4 decades, it has become one of Australia's favourites. The 2005 Church Block is showing just what a little patience can do. After six years, the velvet texture is the dominant feature with integrated tannin taking a backseat.

dArenberg The Stump Jump Shiraz is a deep ruby red hued wine presenting a crimson haze. A whiff of the wine pleases your nose with dark and red fruit aromas including perfumes of blackberry, mulberry, raspberry and plum. These fragrances are replicated on the rich palate, where they intermix with flavours of liquorice, vanilla, baking spice, and subtle earthy notes. Supported by fine tannins, these magnificent characters offer a creamy and succulent mouthfeel. The finish is long and refreshing. This delightful Shiraz has been crafted for immediate consumption, but can also be cellared for 2 to 5 years from vintage.
