The 2014 Cuvee d'Elevage Cabernet is an outstanding expression of a northern Margaret River Cabernet. Moss Wood Moss Wood Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River Moss Wood is one of the Margaret River originals (planted 1969; first vintage 1973) and this iconic flagship wine Langtons Classified since 1990 has long been Western Australias leading Cabernet Sauvignon. Figures from the cellarage company Wine Ark show that it consistently rates as Australias Most Collected Cabernet. Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is intensely perfumed and finely structured with cassis-blackcurrant aromas, hints of cedar and touches of violet. The oak and fruit are neatly balanced. With proven ageing potential the wine develops subtle earth/demi-glace briar characters on the bouquet, and complexity and suppleness on the palate. The unirrigated and widely spaced vineyard (now 14.86-hectares) is planted on gentle north-east facing slopes with sandy loams to a gravelly red/brown loams over clay. Typically the fruit is hand-picked, de-stemmed into open tanks and hand-plunged four times a day until completion of fermentation. At the end of vinification, the wine is allowed to macerate for around 10 to 14 days prior to pressing off into barrel. The wine is matured in 30% new and seasoned French oak barriques for 24 months.

A deep crimson red which opens with the classical Margaret River nose...fresh varietal notes of bright berried fruits, briar and sea spray, followed by wafts of chocolate and mocha with subtle spiced oak aromas. A medium to full bodied palate shows cassis and Satsuma plum characteristics, leading into the sweet mid-palate depth of chocolate and mocha, finishing with defined talents. The wine is elegant and shows great length of flavour and well-structured palate line. 'Pure and fragrant, expect a nose layered with cassis, blackcurrant, leaf and dusty spice rack spices, while in your mouth it's pure, beautifully structured, fine and dry. Rebus, first vintage 2012, is Cabernet Sauvignon with a splash (5-6%) of Malbec. Separate parcels are fermented and matured in French barriques (40% new) for 12 months. The final wine is a selection of the best barrels and aims to be counted among the best and brightest of Margaret River. Rebus typically shows aromas of cherries, violets and graphite followed by a fleshy palate of redcurrants, plum skin and dark chocolate modulating to licorice, black berries and slate, soft, ripe tannins and a persistent mineral finish.

The Hay Shed Hill Block 2 Cabernet Sauvignon displays ripe berry aromas of brilliant intensity with underlying earthen nature along with typical characters well noted from Margaret River. There is a depth here that is hard to fault, in fact its downright breathtaking. The palate itself is quite substantial, even by Western Australian standards; displaying fully ripe, fleshy sweet fruit filling the mid palate with great palate extension driven by the ripe and mature tannin.

Houghton Gladstones Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful example of well established wineries in the Western Australian wine scene with access to some amazing vineyards sites within the Margaret River. On show here are marvelous aromas and flavours of bay leaf, black tea and some spicy mocha notes. Excitingly dense on palate with harmonious oak balance and impressive acidity. A brilliant wine.
