Domaine Henri Germain, Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge
Domaine Henri Germain is best known for its white wines from Meursault, but its reds remain a well-kept secret. This Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge comes from vines rooted in the commune’s higher slopes, where clay-limestone soils and good drainage support Pinot of both structure and finesse. Jean-François Germain, who has managed the estate since 1982, treats the wine with the same measured approach as his whites: whole-berry fermentation, gentle extraction, and élevage in primarily used oak barrels over a period of 18 months. The result is a wine that reflects its place with clarity. The nose presents notes of red cherry, cranberry, and soft earth, with a hint of spice and dried herbs. The palate is lively and composed, with a line of acidity and fine tannins that reward cellaring. While approachable in youth, this wine speaks more clearly with time and pairs well alongside top reds from neighbouring villages.
