Old Kempton Distillery's Small Cask Matured Single Malt Whisky is hand crafted on a magnificent heritage-listed property in Kempton, Tasmania, first gazetted to sell spirits in 1836. Weary travellers would stop at the coaching inn overnight on their ride between northern and southern Tasmania and the local innkeeper would revive them with aq good dram. Despite its long ageing, this minimum 30-month blend is not overtly sweet or oaky; it has a drier style, which is full of spice and character from its highland terroir. Cooked agave is present with a fine mixture of dried fruits, almonds and roasted coffee. There is a subtle and masked fudginess reminiscent of dark cocoa that emerges from the depth in its long and slightly dry finish.

Helios Distillery in Okinawa Japan has been known for producing rums and awamori for a few decades. Little do people know that theyve been distilling their own whisky for a while and use their rum casks to finish this unique line of new blended whisky. An interesting addition to the world of Japanese whisky. Nose: Toasted oak and a touch of moss, creamy lemon and soft malt. Palate: Brown sugar, burnt oak again (now with a touch of earthiness to it), lime marmalade. Finish: Rye bread and a touch of bitter grape.

Further air contact accents white pepper, applemint and oak shavings. The lusciously toasty, perfectly-rounded delivery has impeccable wood selection written all over it: Bittersweet spices challenge the sheer weight of the rye but the grain wins out in a rush of oils, dried peach, dark rye and peppermint. Remarkably accessible at natural strength, the aftertaste turns peppery, oaky, then intensely grainy and long. Some found this a 'fruitier' / more Bourbensque style compared with the 55.8% ABV bottling. Wins on length as the flavour rebounds over minutes. Highest recommendation. 54.5% Alc.Vol. 95 points
