We know we've said it before but, it's important to note: Sidewood Estate have, what is considered by some to be, the most state-of-the-art sparkling winemaking facilities in the country, if not the world. Along with a reputation for astonishing wines, they also have a history of criminally under-pricing their own products. With a traditional blend of 65% chardonnay and 35% pinot noir, this wine has wonderfully toasty brioche aromas enhanced by zesty citrus and bright green apple. A harmonious palate of citrus blossom, biscuits and further green apple, is complemented by a clean, mineralic acidity and a loooooooong, elegant creamy finish. Where do we sign up?

Speaking honestly here, if you chucked an old French guy's name on the label, even the most devout Champagne-heads would struggle to tell the difference. Tucked away nicely in the Adelaide Hills, Sidewood Estate have made an art form out of crafting some of the very best single vineyard cool-climate wines available in Australia. Owen and Cassandra Inglis purchased the boutique property in 2004 and immediately set about making their vision become a reality. Their Sidewood Shiraz displays that vision to perfection. Attention to detail is the key here which enables flavours of red cherry, currants and dark plum to shine through along with hints of cinnamon and spice. The texture is beguiling and gives promise to a wine that will age for up to a decade.

Medium straw in colour this wine by Sidewood displays lifted white peach, fig, pear and pistachio nuts on the nose. This barrel fermented Adelaide Hills Chardonnay offers superbly structured characters. It is tight and lean, laced with citrus lime and tropical fruit characters. Some lovely subtle complexities from careful oak maturation on lees include nutmeg, sage spice and pistachio flavours which linger on the after taste. A lovely crisp wine now, that will benefit from some short term cellaring once bottled. Serve with Asian style broth, mushroom based dishes or Lobster bisque is a great match to this Chardonnays complexity in flavour, but finesse in structure.
