The Hedonist McLaren Vale Fiano
94pt, Great Value Fiano “Refreshing and engaging. Very good.”(Halliday) from a McLaren Vale veteran and certified Organic/Biodynamic too. Walter Clappis has been making wine in McLaren Vale for nearly 40 years and has won innumerable Trophies and Golds. With fruit sourced from Cooter Vineyard, Whites Valley in the Willunga foothills. "Golden apple and green peach, fennel frond, lemon pith, fresh almond, some white florals, a little flinty/earthy mineral note. This is fresh, zesty, picked at an ideal nexus of fruit depth and tension, the seam of fine grip adding another compelling dimension. Refreshing and engaging. Very good. 94JH Great Value.” (Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion).
Dowie Doole The Banker McLaren Vale Shiraz
Take home a mighty Shiraz of concentration power and balance, from winemaker Chris Thomas, now part owner of Dowie Doole. It was founded in 1995 by Drew Dowie and Norm Doole, lon associated with grape growing in McLaren vale. Since 2015, it has been in the hands of Chief Winemaker Chris Thomas, who bought it from them with other investor friends. This is an archetypal McLaren vale Shiraz with dark fruit and chocolate, coffee, herbs and licorice.
Aphelion Ardent McLaren Vale Sagrantino
Enjoy a rare 93pt Single Vineyard Sangrentino from McLaren Vale's excellent, and (rapdidly) rising star Rob Mack. Rob was voted Young Gun of Wine in 2018 and his Aphelion, which won Best Small Producer at the McLaren Vale Wine Show in 2019, now proudly sports a Halliday estate rating of Five Red Stars. “A single vineyard in the White’s Valley subzone of the Vale. Young vines, but uber-low yielding. 3 months on skins with minimal agitation but for the frisk of CO2 as fermentation ensued. 18 months in older French oak. A delicious wine. So much promise embedded in the ferrous chalky tannins, acid crunch and panoply of blue and red fruits smattered with dried scrub, beef jerky, tamarind and olive. 93pts” (Ned Goodwin MW, The Halliday Wine Companion 2021).
