One of the benchmark wines to come out of the Coonawarra, the Penfolds Bin 128 is a delightful cool-climate shiraz. Matured in French Oak, with flavours of white pepper and floral spice, the 2014 Bin 128 is a rich and full-bodied Shiraz.

An intense nose of blackberry, black olive, liquorice and cigar box characters leads to a powerful palate of rich blackberry, olive tapenade and vanillin spice with dense, powerful and grippy tannins. Fermented for 7 10 days in traditional open top fermenters the wine undergoes malo-lactic fermentation in French and American hogsheads followed by twenty months oak maturation. 2016 Penfolds Bin 138 Shiraz Grenache Mataro 750ml is a delicate blend from the Barossa Valley wine region. Christmas cake aromas are evident on the nose and the palate is textured with an old Barossa disposition. A lengthy finish make this blend particularly enjoyable. Medium deep colour. Lovely juicy blackberry, dark plum aromas with ginger, savoury oak notes. Generous and polished in structure with dark plum, blackberry, ginger flavours, fine looseknit slinky textures and underlying roasted walnut, mocha notes. Finishes chocolaty and long with bitter sweet notes. A really attractive wine with lovely density and vinosity. Really great to drink soon, to take advantage of the ripe youthful and buoyant fruit, but should keep for quite a while developing an earthy complexity. Andrew Caillard MW93 Points

Created in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 is a regional wine that reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of South Australia's Coonawarra district and the relatively elegant style of cool climate Shiraz. From the 1980 vintage, French oak replaced American, highlighting the pepper, spice and floral characteristics that define this style. Since the mid-1980s, a greater attention has been paid to fruit ripeness, resulting in a wine that is fuller in style and structure.

The Vicar is selected annually from the most outstanding vineyard parcels of McLaren Vale Shiraz. The wine is a pure expression of the region, variety and of gentle winemaking. Powerful and graceful, a wine for the purists.

The Author pays homage to pioneering vigneron John Riddoch (1827-1901). A true visionary, Riddoch is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Australian wine. The Author represents the finest expression of the vintage. The 2019 Shiraz is dark magenta in colour with lifted spice, sweet oak and dark berry aromatics. The wine shows vibrant red berry fruits, with hints of plum and bramble. Aged in a combination of new and old French Oak, seamleessly intergrated with the fruit. Refined and silky tannins lead to a long and persistent length of flavour. This has all the hallmarks of a classic Coonawarra Shiraz and will drink well now but will reward patient cellaring for 10-15 years.

There are enticing aromas of dark chocolate and warming spice leading to a luscious palate of concentrated dark forest berry fruits derived from old Barossa vines - layered with complexity of spice from time spent maturing in oak barrels, silky tannins and a long finish.
