Torbreck is actually named after the forest near Inverness, Scotland where the winery's founder, David Powell worked as a lumberjack after completing university studies. The winemaking style at Torbreck is meticulous and dedicated to producing exceptional wines. They use carefully selected 225-litre oak barriques for maturation, known as Dominique Laurent 'Magic Casks'. The oak is personally harvested from Forêt de Tronçais in Allier, and the staves are aged for 48 to 54 months at an exposed location for maximum seasoning. The staves are then hand-made into barrels and heated over three differing flames for several hours, resulting in a gentle toast due to the remarkable density of the wood. The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of Australian table wine, graduating with the 17th diploma in winemaking in Australia. He went on to become the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business, which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Today, the custodian of Jim Barry Wines is their second son Peter, who joined the family winery in 1977 and now works along side his own sons, Tom and Sam. The Barry family name is synonymous with the Clare wine region. The Barry family believe that great wine is made in the vineyard and as such, are committed to owning their own vineyards. This control allows them to develop outstanding fruit quality and flavour which are then retained during winemaking. Over the last 60 years the family has worked to establish a mosaic of sites - 17 vineyards covering 320 hectares in the Clare Valley and two vineyards covering 35 hectares in the Coonawarra. Created by a “beautiful young woman” , this ancient amber coloured Italian Liqueur dates back to 1525. It was gifted to the artist ‘Bernardino Luini’, a member of the Leonardo da Vinci School. The said “beautiful woman” was subsequently immortalised by Luini in a renowned fresco in Saronno (although, the true source of Luini’s inspiration remains a matter of some speculation.) Commercial production of the recipe was begun in the 18th Century by the Reina family in their apothecary shop in Saronno. There are seventeen ingredients in all. The nose displays spirity almond and spice aromas. DiSarrono's natural apricot fruit sweetness is subtly countered by the addition of crushed almonds.
