Cellaring: Drink now or to 2022 Geoff Hardy's great-great grandfather, the original Thomas Hardy, first planted grapes in South Australia in the 1850s and was one of the founding fathers of the Australian wine industry. In 1980, Geoff left the then family company, Thomas Hardy and Sons, to make his own way in the Australian wine world. Geoff and fellow viticulturalist Ian Leask purchased the promising Pertaringa vineyard in McLaren Vale. A few years later, Geoff found the perfect location for producing cool climate grapes in the Adelaide Hills. He planted the vineyard in 1987 and named it K1 since this unique site was the first commercial planting of vines in the Kuitpo region in the southern Adelaide Hills. Three decades later, Wines by Geoff Hardy is made up of three South Australian wineries founded by Geoff - Pertaringa in McLaren Vale, K1 by Geoff Hardy in the Adelaide Hills and Hand Crafted by Geoff Hardy sourced from a variety of premium regions across South Australia. These brands now make up Wines by Geoff Hardy and continue the 160-year old family tradition of pushing the boundaries of Australian viticulture.

The cool-climate of the Adelaide Hills has proven to be a haven for Pinot Noir and is quickly establishing a reputation akin to the benchmark Australian regions. Tim Knappstein from Riposte harnesses the qualities of the region and the varietal with effortless ease with his The Sabre. Bright colour in the glass is followed by a lifted floral nose with a savoury edge. The palate is fresh, clean and superbly powerful. A delight.

The Dagger has been deliberately honed to create a vibrant, rich, earlier drinking Pinot with all the red fruit plumpness of classic Pinot Noir. Drink young while the edge is keen.

This Gruner Vetliner by Longview has a brilliant clarity and pale straw colour. Aromas of pear, white pepper and celery notes are evident and the palate is dry and spicy with a lingering finish of white peach, underpinned with lovely refreshing acidity.

Tomich Hill champion the process of handcrafting from estate grown fruit from their high altitude cool climate vineyard in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. Resulting in a Sauvignon Blanc that displays elegance, complexity and a true exhibition of variety. Opening with an intense citrus and snow pea aroma the flavorsome palate is citrus focused, with tropical fruit and a crisp and persistent finish.

A Sicilian white grape, the name means Cricket. Once used to make Marsala but now premium white table wines. A good drink on its own or chilled for summer. Goes well with seafood.

This Fiano is intensely flavoured and aromatic. The nose is of home grown apricots, lifted with hints of florals, citrus and nectarine. Firm acid frames the fruit giving presence and depth. Chalky minerality is underlain with a dash of honey and spice to finish. A beautiful bright and textural wine, with great length. This Fiano matches well with Italian dishes and seafood.
