I was shocked at the quality of the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin and I can’t think of another wine that comes close to this level of depth, concentration and richness in the vintage. Its inky color is followed by sensational notes of roasted herbs, licorice, caramelized meats and layers of black and blue fruits. Rich, full-bodied, thick and unctuous, hats off to the Perrin family for this incredible effort! Give bottles 4-6 years of cellaring and drink over the following two decades. Antinori Solaia is an intense ruby red colour. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, it delivers aromas of ripe fruit, spices, black pepper, chocolate, coffee and vanilla.

Housed in a handmade bottle with glass eagles perched both on the bottle stopper and submerged in whiskey inside the bottle, the very literally named bottle is filled with 20-year-old brown and retains its classic 90 proof. For those unfamiliar with Eagle Rare, its made with Buffalo Traces #1 mashbill, which contains less rye than your typical bourbon and results in a sweet and smooth drinking experience.

Deliciously smooth with a long, rich finish, the natural dark mahogany colour of the 30 Years Old is the richest in the range. This distinguished single malt is matured exclusively for thirty years in Oloroso sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez, Spain. Laying undisturbed in the same casks for this thirty year period, the maturing spirit transforms to create this luxurious, naturally dark, single malt whisky characterised by its rich flavours of dried fruits, orange and spice.

Château Pichon-Longueville Lalande is one of the most important Super Seconds and this 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac estate has made tremendous strides in the last 20 years. This is largely due to the energy, drive and ambition of May-Eliane de Lenquesaing, who took over the property in 1978. Pichon-Longueville Lalande is a 75-hectare property that produces on average 36,000 cases per year. Located in the east of the Pauillac appellation, the vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 45%, Merlot 35%, Cabernet Franc 12%, Petit Verdot 8%) lie on deep gravel beds underpinned by clay and then sandstone and limestone (part of these vineyards actually reside in the St-Julien appellation). The wine is fermented in stainless steel cuvées and then matured in oak barriques (50% new) for 18 months. Pichon-Longueville Lalande is not as powerful or as tannic as some its Pauillac neighbours and this is mainly because of its relatively high Merlot content. In the best years, it is one of the most exotic and voluptuously scented wines of the Médoc. At least a decade of cellaring is required before the wines should be approached.
