The 2021 Red Grenache is a cool wine, because it throws off the usual full-bodied expectation of an easy drinking red and replaces it with something crunchy, spicy, medium-bodied and exciting. The fruit is sweet and tempered by savory tannins, and all in all, there is a heck of a lot of pleasure here. I love the febrile tension in the mouth. Really smart.

This parcel was carefully selected by winemaker Nick Badrice. True to its name, Nick describes this wine as 'the ultimate Barossa Grenache'. It offers berries, spice and wild raspberry notes with velvety tannins on the lingering finish.

The newest release from elusive and enigmatic winemaker and grapegrower Jack West. Sourced from vines planted in the rich red soils of the Lienert Vineyards, where the fruit ripens lazily under the big blue skies of the Barossas western ridge. The result is a wonderfully flavoursome blend of Barossas three hero red varieties Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. The Grenache brings vitality and juicy red fruits. Shiraz provides richness and dark fruits, with Mataro playing a key role delivering structure and a good dose of spice.

Super light, almost Pinot-esque example of Grenache from biodynamic vines in the Barossa Valley.

A wine who’s reputation proceeds it, 0f particular note is the interesting winemaking on show here – it’s old school, yet cleverly so, with all the components co fermented, everything relying on the juice, rather than new oak to tell the story. I like that blend of old and new – its what the Barossa does best. A mid red colour, this has dried herbs, cherry, a waft of VA and tomato paste on the slightly forward savoury nose. There is even a hint of saddle, though its more winey than bretty. The palate is medium bodied, pleasurably soft and somewhat evolved, with spicy old oak the only influence, the rest derived from integrated, maturing fruit. It feels like a pair of favourite jeans – worn in all the right places and comfortable from the get go, yet without losing its style. Suffice to say its one very drinkable, enjoyable, medium bodied drink and its all the better for it. It probably won’t seduce you with its intensity and some will be looking for more primary fruit freshness (I’d like to see it in a screwcap too because I’m a stelvinista or even a vino-loker: now they are pretty sexy too) but I’d drink a ton more of this than so many heavier Barossan reds. 18.0

The inspiration from the Barossas best old vine Grenache vineyards created Annexus, an addition to our Plexus blend. Annexus is a small unique blend selected from our best old low yielding Grenache vineyards, made only in the best years. Winemaking: Fermentation in small open top fermenters incorporating 20% whole bunches. Oak Maturation: 100% barrel maturated for 12 months, in older French oak hogsheads (300-litre barrels). Colour: Vibrant purple-red. Nose: Perfumed fruit aromatics complexed with savoury spice and charcuterie notes. Palate: Generous and rich and structured with texture and impressive flavour intensity. An array of red fruits, plum and raspberry fill the palate.

The now much sought after Righteous range of wines from Kym Teusner was first established in 2005 with the Grenache and this is the latest incarnation of this foreboding Barossa wine. Sourced from an 80 year old bush-vine vineyard, the Righteous Grenache was gently crushed and fermented in open fermenters with regular pump-overs. Maturation was completed in a mix of French and American oak and has resulted in a modern classic Grenache.

Hand-crafted using small parcels of old vine fruit, The Barking Dog Grenache Shiraz Mataro is an exceptional example of three of the Barossa Valleys finest varieties. Natural fruit sweetness drives the palate with flavours of blackberry, plum, tobacco and a touch of spice to round it out. The soft balanced tannins and acid provide the core structure and combine to provide an intense long finish.

How to describe this Lienert Vineyards Grenache in as few words as possible? It’s juicy, it's pretty, it's delicate, it's racy...and if you had to chose one word, then that word would be....sexy! Red fruited, bright and energetic thanks to the home grown efforts of grape grower brother John and wine making brother James.
