Elgins Crossing commemorates pioneering vigneron John Riddochs outward voyage to Australia aboard the sailing ship Lady Elgin in 1851. John Riddoch's first vintage of Coonawarra Claret (1890) was a shiraz-dominant wine. As the region's first wine grower he envisaged that Coonawarra would become one of Australia's finest wine regions. The 2021 Riddoch The Winegrower Shiraz has frangrant blackberry anise aromas, supple tannins and complex graphite tones define the stylish Coonawarra Shiraz. Matured in new and seasoned French and American oak barrels. Drink now or will reward careful cellaring for up to 10 years.

Cape Jaffa was a pioneer both in the Mt Benson region and in terms of its focus on biocynamics and sustainability. The first of the Mount Benson wineries,Cape Jaffa’s fully certified biodynamic vineyard provides 50% of production, with additional fruit sourced from a certified biodynamic grower in Wrattonbully. This is a lovely drop for warmer weather. As Shanteh Wale says in The Halliday Wine Companion, this is “made for drinking and good times. Serve slightly chilled" but it is not without complexity. "Blackberries, prune, plums and thistle. Picked oregano, margoram and green olive.”

Lifted aromas of blue fruits with a core of dark plum, this Coonawarra shiraz is overlaid with spice and hint of toasty oak. Rich plum and Forest berry fruits coat fine-grained tannins with fresh acidity holding the line until the very end.

This Cabernet Shiraz blend from Majella, icons of Coonawarra, is all about bright youthful fruit. Made with little oak influence, the upfront mulberry and blackcurrant characters are supported by fine lingering tannins.

In 2004, similar vintage conditions to the iconic 1962 vintage, inspired Penfolds winemakers to recreate Max Schuberts iconic wine. Cabernet Sauvignon from Block 20, alongside Koonunga Hill and Kalimna Shiraz, were included in the 2004 Penfolds Bin 60A blend.

The Block 5 sub-section of the Kidman vineyard sits at the northern end of the celebrated Coonawarra growing region. This part of the district ripens earlier than the south, making it very well suited to Shiraz. With its classic Terra Rossa over Limestone soils, the mature vines on this vineyard produce exceptional and highly sophisticated cool climate Shiraz, which is approachable in its youth but also eminently cellar-worthy.
