The Brand family story starts with the arrival of Eric Brand in Coonawarra in 1950. Today Brand & Sons is run by Sam Brand, the 4th generation of this family, which has played a major role in Coonawarra for over 70 years. The remnants of an ancient seabed formed the hard-packed Limestone base which atop sits the famous Coonawarra Red Terra-Rossa. Even today the marine life can be seen with the soft rock providing a natural filter for the water pooled in the aquifer below. A millennium in creation, it is these features combined that provide almost perfect conditions for premium grapes to grow. The ocean breeze still blows from the west providing the cool nights to compliment the warm days and development of flavour for our Coonawarra wines.

Producing the Quintessential Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon was one of Jim’s life-long endeavours. Elegant yet powerful Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Lifted aromas of blackberry and plum, dried sage, mint and tobacco with overlaid with cedar oak notes. An intense and flavour-filled palate of plums, blackberries complemented with sturdy but well balance tannins holding together a long lingering finish.

Tucked away in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, next to Saint Emilion, is award winning Château de Colombe, a tiny estate much neglected until we took ownership in 2012. Now it’s being lavished with utmost care in the vineyard and the cellar. Our Head Winemaker, Haut-Brion-trained Jean-Marc Sauboua, quickly spotted the potential of its steep, south-facing slopes and limestone soils. Judging by the 11 Golds won over the last five vintages (two for 2020), he was spot on. 2020 has been unanimously declared as 'exceptional', its fruit deliciously ripe, which has made for a very much ‘drink me now’ style. Merlot with a little of both Cabernets and Malbec, aged a few months in barrel, this red is fruit-rich and supple. For now open early and decant.
